Here's the scenario:
I recorded a live performance on a firewire drive and brought it back
to the studio to mix it. I tried playing the 20 tracks from the
firewire drive but logic would lock up every time(OS 9) so I copied
the tracks to the internal drive in the G4. I did some mixing and now
I'm ready to troubleshoot the firewire drive issue. So I'd like to
change where Logic looks for the files to the firewire drive without
deleting the originals. The online help says to click the file and
select "Update file information". This causes the waves logo to
spin
(got some waves plugs in the song) a couple times and that's it. No
dialog box to select a new file like the help says. The only other
option I think I have is to move the files another drive (where logic
can't immediately find them and select the files one by one on the
firewire drive when logic opens the song. The problem is that there's
a lot of data here and space for it is at a premium right now. Any
ideas?

Select all the audio files in the audio window, then from the
"audiofile" menu, copy/convert
or move the files to a different or new folder. It's best to do all
file/folder management
from this menu in Logicf rather than moving or copying files with finder.
You will end up
with more hair and fewer bruises on your forehead.

Thanks but I don't want to move or copy the files. I already have
them in two different places. I want a fast way to get logic to look
for the files in a different place. I guess what I'm basically asking
is if the process outlined in the online help works for anybody else
because it isn't working for me. But thanks for the help, I
definitely appreciate the audio window file functions. I just wish
some of the file handling would be more flexible and more obvious in
its function.

OK, you need to confuse Logic into not knowing where the files are. This can
be
accomplished in the Finder by moving them to a different folder. Done? Now
boot up
Logic and open your song. Logic tells you it can't find the first Audio file
(it will ask
for it by name) and gives you the option to "Find" or
"Skip" so click "Find" and locate
the first file *from the Firewire drive* When Logic looks for the second
file, the first
place it looks is the last place you pointed it, which is still the Firewire
drive, so
presto, all your files are found there and the song opens up. If you select
"Show File
Infos" in the Audio window, you'll see the files are all on the FW
drive now. To go back
to the other copies, just reverse the process!
