You just answered your own question Chris. The most common use for a
degenerative delay line, would be, to have it in a continuous way, such
as the in built delay filters. ie the Filter inserted in the feedback
loop.
Ofcourse, your suggestion would be great for a single hit.
I cannot remember the name of it, but there was a freeware multitap
delay (AU) just updated the other day, which is ideal for some
alternative delay setups.

BTW, It can get really interesting if you start putting pitch shifting
and other modulations in the feedback loop.
