Subject: Logic - 2408 Midi/Audio Latency Issues...
Message #158236
I have heard of some problems with latency and the 2408 in the following scenario: Basic Gear = G5 - Panther 10.3.x - 2408 (g5 compatible) - and logic 6... - I have friends who would like to record their MIDI as audio ( ... when things are set up like this - then you don't have to re-patch to print audio later - so it's nice and easy, if it works with no latency) and the hookup is as such: Mac midi - in logic or performer to gigastudios ( light pipe out of giga's) into MAC 2408 light pipe in - back into logic ( listening in monitor mode or recording ...) - apparently when you play on the MIDI keyboard, there is a sizable latency issue, when you hear the audio back on the Mac, (when things are hooked up in this fashion)... Questions: - Is this true? Has anyone experienced this? - Are there any settings that could reduce latency? - ... Any better way to go (gigastudios need to be in the chain (vs - all mac setup))? -- Thanks - RevDave Lists@... [db-lists] Check out some great Domain Names at: http://www.domains4days.com

Are you using the CueMix DSP Direct Monitoring (software that came with the PCI-424 card) ? If not, chances are much of your latency is due to routing the audio all the way into your software, then back out to the monitors. If you have audio outs on your 2408 connected up, you can get close to zero/digital mixer latency by using CueMix DSP for direct monitoring. If you need to get your signal into the software first, to monitor with effects, then you can reduce latency by reducing your audio buffer size - with the corresponding trade-offs in cpu hit, etc. I've only addressed latency on the Mac/2408 side. You will also have midi latency, and some audio latency in your giga machine. Reducing buffers in giga will help this .. Trond

I've had the same issue with my Gigastudios. How long are your lightpipe cables? Are you "daisy-chaining" your Gigastudios on the same lightpipe connection? Try shortening your cables if possible and don't daisy-chain and see if that makes a difference (I had 50' lightpipe cables connecting to my Mackie D8B and then to the 2408 with four Gigas on the same lightpipe connection; doing the above reduced the latency substantially).
