Midi via USB comes without a common reliable standard implementation yet.
USB ports cannot be accessed "the hard way" -directly- as it was
(and is)
possible via the serial port.
The AMT8 connected to a real mac serial port (like the stealthport) includes
all the special timing benefits of ATM transmission (compared to
MTPs/express under logic!) as well as it saves cpu processing power
compared to a direct USB-connection (really, no kidding!!); at this point in
time the good old RS422 is the most stable way to connect usb-macs with
midi gear like AMT8/U8-mkII and therefore should be preferred.
Finally- if you haven´t switched to an usb-powermac yet, just relax
and
call emagic support when you really plan to upgrade your mac; ask them about
their recent experiences with direct USB/AMT8 connections, and when they
tell you everything would be fine -plug&play :-)
