Subject: Lets get the Sonalksis Comp!! Re: Sonalksis compressor

Pete spake: >Group buy? Yes please - any chance? Yeah baby!! I have just been trying it out as a comp for tracking vocals and for the first time using just my mic straight into the input of Metric Halo I/O and no other comps or mic pres I am finally getting that same feeling I do when I am tracking vocals in a big studio. It is just brilliant the way they gave in a limiter that is independent of the compressor section. I can set the gain on my mic pre at a level that can handle a shout then set the threshold of the Sonalksis low enough to let me hear a whisper in a dense mix and then I can just let go and sing as dynamically as I want and it just sounds creamy and smooth even when I am hitting the limiter hard. I also tried it out as a total program compressor and it sound great there too. I love this thing maybe even as much as some of my UAD-1 comps. Though the UAD-1 fairchild definitely still roolz on as a program compressor. Caveats: I would like a true mono mode. A real side chain or a more flexible side chain EQ section would be nice. I don't know what our administrators are going to say about a group buy or even if Sonalksis will agree to one but I for one am definitely going to buy this compressor one way or another by the time my one month demo has expired. I really hope there is a group buy and soon because I don't think I am going to be wanting to do with out it even for a day or two.

We (the list admins) have discussed this with eachother and have came to the conclusion it's still a too soon since the last group buy to run another. (Partly to give everyone time to save their pennies again so we can have another great turnout the next time we do have one, and partly to keep the LUG from becoming too commercial, as it would be if we promoted group buys constantly). Sorry! > I really hope there is a group buy and soon because I don't > think I am going to be wanting to do with out it even for a > day or two. Well, since a group buy tends to last a week or two and generally you have to wait until its over to buy it anyway, it would be a lot faster to just buy it anyway :P Jeremy

Uh, but surely you're compressing post-A/D, ie there's no real point in applying it as a tracking compressor/limiter because if you clip the A/D, the damage is done before it gets to the comp? Or is it just that you want the singer's monitored signal to be compressed nicely, ie the compressor is only on the monitor signal, not being recorded, and the same compressor will be applied to the recorded-dry signal on playback? So you still have the flexibility of using something else in the mix if desired? I want the singer (more often or not that would moi) to monitor comfortably and think his voice sounds just too too groovy in the headphones so that he can think about singing rather than engineering during his take. And in my short time with it, once I have my take, damned if the Sonalksis don't sound so freeking great that I just leave it as is and don't bother to stick in another comp.

Minor quibble I suppose, but the UI for both the EQ and compressor plugs is kinda cheesy... how they sound is of utmost importance, of course! 8^) Brian ___________________________ Logic Audio Platinum 6.3.3 PowerMac G4 933MHz OS X 10.3.2 1 GB RAM M-Audio Delta 24/96 (fed via S/PDIF from a Yamaha DSP Factory)

Subject: [LUG] GEN - G5 Logic Setup

Hi All, A quick question, I'm going to receive a Dual Proc 1.8 Ghz G5 in the next week. Will a new G5 boot off an external firewire drive running 10.2.8 - or is it Panther-Only from here on in? (I currently boot off an external firewire drive running 10.2.8 which has all my plugins etc. and apps. It would make my initial transition sooo easy if i can just boot the new machine off that drive and fire up Logic with the XS Key on the new machine.) thanks, valentin artist, producer, ninja www.qedmobius.com

Although your new Mac will have Panther 10.3.2, it will recognize any system running 10.2.7 and up. Cheers

Logic Gold 6... and my pro upgrade order status on apple.com is still "shipping on or before 02.23.2004" - which is today... we'll see! Only trouble I had with Logic and the 828 is the usual junk that folks run into... the software monitoring issue (where you here an ever so slight echo)... and I had a brain fart and didn't think that inputs 1,2 for the 828 are the mic/guitar inputs on the front... remember that the ones on the back (analog) start with inputs 3,4 before you start wondering why you can't record something, or see spikes on your audio objects for external hardware... oddly enough, I have issues with the MIDI clock (MIDI interface is the midiman midisport8x8).... though I think it is just the version of Logic I'm using (Gold 6.3.1 I think - Latest they have posted on emagic site).... It would send the clock on "all", but it will when I select individual ports... this drove me nuts as to why everything sounded different as I moved from PC to Mac a little while back.... the LFO's and what not on my Access Virus RackXL weren't getting a clock signal and defaulted to whatever the clock is in the Virus.... and running midi through the 828 caused problems between the Virus and Sounddiver... never did figure out what was up there, but it works fine through the m-audio (midiman) interface... Other than those things, I've not really had any other major problems... just hoping that upgrade to pro comes soon! I've heard the panther drivers for the 828 are somewhat "flakey"... and I have had a few issues here and there with them... sometimes I'll lose the 828 (still nothing concrete on what causes it), but a simple reboot normally does the trick... just make sure you uninstall EVERY earlier driver for the 828 BEFORE you install the new drivers for panther... I'd imagine MOTU will put out newer drivers any day now... don't expect to get up and running without some troubleshooting, but don't expect disaster either.... have fun! Paul P.S. - G5... all I can say is... "just damn...."
