I have been looking for ways to record MIDI with several people
playing at once (in a sort of jam session setting) and I had a great
challenge figuring out how I to use two keyboards to controll two
different synths, but record them at the same time.
I figured out a way, and here it is, for those who may find it
usefull, in this example I use my Nord Keyboard, Oxygene 8, and Akai
s5000, but you can obviosly substitue whatever sound modules and
controllers you use.
So in this example, I'm going to make my Nord Modular keyboard
control itself (it is a sound module with the keyboard controller
attached), and I'm going to make the Oxygene 8 control my Akai S5000
sampler.
Side Note: Just in case some of the terminology is confusing, a
sound module is something that makes sound (like a synth or a
sampler) and the controller refers to a device which sends MIDI info
that can control the synth, like playing a keyboard that will make
drum sounds. (Forgive me for the obvious, but when I was a greener
newbie, terminology often confused me).
So are you ready? Good. Here we go!!!!!! ;)
1)Assign each MIDI keyboard controller to output on unique channels.
This step will depend on the controller you are using. You may have
to check the documentation that came with your controller. In this
example, I have my Nord Modular on MIDI channel 1 and Oxygene 8 on
channel 2.
2)In a logic environment (I stay on the clicks and ports layer, but
it doesn't really matter what layer one uses) Wire objects as
such:
-From the physical input, attach two transformers.
-Assign one transformer to filter all data except that on channel 1
-Assign the other transformer to filter all except channel 2
-Create two single intruments, assinging one as the Nord and one
as the Akai.
-Wire the tranformer for channel 1 to the Nord, and the transformer 2
to the Akai instrument.
-Now wire from the instruments to the sequncer input/record module.
3)In the arrange window, create a track with "no output" and
highlite it.
4)Now you can play the Oxygene 8 and the Nord and they will control
two different sound modules. But what if the sound modules is a 16
channel multi-instruments, how can I controll a sound on say MIDI
channel 5? Good question, the answer is you can go to the instrument
object (in the environment, wired right after the transformer),
highlite the instrument and in it's parameter box (on the left of
the screen) you can specify what channel that instrument will use.
5)Now you are ready to record. Go back to the arrange window. Record
ready the "no output" track that is highlited, and play away.
Record
away.
When you are finished, you will have a sequence with information on
two different MIDI channels, so after you are finished recording,
choose the "demix by channel" action in the menu and walla, you
will
have two distinct sequences.
Now you can create a track in the arrange window for the nord, and
one for the Akai and now you have Multiple Controller, Multi-track
MIDI recording. You can have up to 16 different controllers
controlling 16 different synths (one for every MIDI channel).
Okay, on a side note, I think there are other ways of doing this,
but this is the only one I that I have gotten to work, so far. It
can be a bit cumbersom at times, because you have to keep going back
to the environment window if you want to change what sound you are
controlling (i.e. the channel parameter of the instrument). But it
works :)
Thank you for reading my spiel, and I hope someone finds this
usefull. I would also like to thank Hendrik Jan Veenstra for his
input. If anyone has suggestions or imporovements please e-mail me
personally. Questions are also welcome.
Take care, happy sequencing.
Cheers,
Andrew Mylko
