Subject: Re: Dedicated Audio Engines?
Message #156217
<Admin - we have stopped using the [LAM] header> In Digest 7012, William Menz drew up a detailed proposal for a dedicated piece of audio hardware he calls the AU1, which he hopes Emagic will manufacture. As his ideas are too long to quote, I urge you to read the original. In a nutshell, he believes that Macs are so inherently crash-prone when dealing with digital audio that he proposes moving the entire function, dsp processing included, to a separate standalone unit that would be well-integrated into Logic. Superficially, at least, it sounds a lot like a Digidesign's TDM in an expansion chassis--hardly a crash-proof system, particularly when used with Logic. Of course, the AU1 might have the advantage of being designed by the same company that makes the computer OS. And the audio engine itself would, presumably, be in the external unit which might reduce potential conflicts. (There would still have to be some kind of internal audio software--but it could be very simple.) So, William, why do you think this would work better than Digi's system? (And thanks for all the deep thinking!) Michael Levine www.MichaelLevineMusic.com
