it reminds me of symbolic sound's kyma system
(http://www.symbolicsound.com/), although entirerly different from a
functional point of view. the idea is the same: using a dedicated
machine for audio processing. i'm all for it. it would bring us back to
the orginal idea of 'the instrument', a device dedicated exclusively to
making music. if this can be done in a modular way, including the
multiple benefits information technology has to offer, then you have a
winner. but implementing this idea....i can already see multiple
obstacles ahead. not that it can't be done, but it's a hard job, that's
for sure.

but it already exists!
the mackies and akais, the roland and tascams of this world all have
dedicated hard disk recorders that are not laptops or minitowers!
the beauty of something like Logic on a powerbook, is that it runs on a
powerbook, y'know?
alongside your adress book, email programs and pdf manuals etc...
what you seem to want is a Mackie SDR 24-96, no?
