Hello all!
I have a PowerBook G4, 15", 800 MHz, with 512 MB RAM and a 60 GB
internal hard drive.
I am running Panther 10.3.2 and Logic 6.3.3.
MY QUESTION:
If I connect an external monitor, what can I expect to happen with
Logic use, as far as performance goes?
I have heard different things, but I would like to hear what people
that have DONE this have ACTUALLY experienced.
Also, I do plan on maxing out the memory to 1GB soon.... Would this
help?

Hi Chris,
I´m sorry I have no experience right now with adding a seperate
monitor, but I also have a powerbook with logic and a lot of trouble with
it, so i wonder if u
might have recognized similar problems:
Logic wont quit. When I try to quit it often closes all windows but keeps
showing the menu bar and the rotating ball cursor. Even force quitting
fails. I can repeat the force quit as often as I want and Logic still
remains there. I have to force shut down the powerbook.
Sometimes I can quit Logic, but when I try to relaunch it, it sometimes
says: XS key no longer available, sometimes it just stucks with the
"setting up memory buffers" message on the startup window.
I also had a lot of trouble with unstable usb communication (I guess that it
must be something like this): Sometimes Logic just comes up with that
rotating ball cursor and keeps hanging with that. Force quitting is not
available (see above), I guess it´s when logic tries to look for the
xs key butusb communication is broken down. I tried different usb devices:
an apple pro mouse, works for some minutes and then just hangs (reconnecting
will not help), also my digital foto camera, when communicting with iphoto,
often stucks in sending pictures to the mac. I also tried an edirol PCR30
usb midi keyboard and was not able to set it up working. it works for some
minutes and then no more midi data will be shown in logics transport window.
I read at apple discussions that trashing the -Library/Caches folder will
solve stucking usb mouse comunication on powerbooks but it seems not to be
better.
I also removed my additional 512MB module and reinstalled the whole system
because I thought it was a corrupted ram what makes all this unstable
trouble. no success. So, maybe u can tell me more about this?
Powerbook G4 Alu 17" 1.33 GHz
Ram 512 MB
OSX Panther 10.3.2
Logic Platinum 6.3.3
no midi interface
built in core audio

Well, looks like you've got a nice system, much better than mine,
spec-wise....
Don't know what to tell you... I have had NONE of the problems that you
mentioned.
There are SOOO many factors to all of these issues that people report.....
For instance, does one have "cracked" software on their system?
How much have they
used the Internet with it? What have they downloaded? How many programs do
you
have in your Applications folder, and what kinds? By who were they made???
What
plug-ins do you have running from third-parties? Again, are they
"cracked" or REAL,
supported versions.....?
Do you regularly "repair disk permissions" and "repair the
hard drive" with the Disk
Utility (booted from the OS X CD-ROM)???
etc. etc. etc.... the list of possible factors goes on and on....
The ONLY problems that I have had with Logic 6.3.3 under Panther 10.3.2 are
GRAPHICAL in nature, and some strange "oddities" that pop-up every
once in a while,
but nothing major, that I can see so far....
Sorry that this was really of no help.....
I WOULD like to get some responses on my initial post about usuing an
external
monitor on the PowerBook G4, and using Logic... etc... Please refer to my
original
post, (all that might know about this issue and have experience in doing
it)!!!

Works OK here, Ti 1Ghz, 1GB RAM, OS X 10.3.1, Logic 6.3.2.
Redraw on the second screen (19" at 1280x960) is a little slower than
on the LCD. Using the external screen consumes more power at the video
card, so the fan is on more often.

Thanks John!
So, you think that running Logic 6 with an external 17" Apple monitor
(or something similar) coming from a PowerBook G4, 800 Mhz, 512 MB RAM is
feasible,
i.e. realistic and stable???
If I only have to be concerned with slightly slower redraws ON THE SECOND
SCREEN, and the fan coming on more often, that really doesn't bother me,
honestly... As long as I get some more screen space!!!!
Your final thoughts? (And anyone else...???)
Thanks again John!

Sure. I've been running a second monitor on various powerbooks since
1998. My current setup has been in daily use for graphic design since
2001, with a PBG4/500 then PBG4/1GHz and Panasonic 19" CRT monitor.
Works fine in OS 9 and OS X. I've been hot-plugging the external
monitor with no issues - OS X reconfigures on the fly.
The Apple LCD monitors require an optional DVI-to-ADC converter to
hook up. Unless you specifically want an Apple monitor, I'd go for a
generic LCD with a VGA or DVI (better) input.
If you're using OS X, get more RAM. Not for the dual screens, just
because OS X really likes RAM.
