Subject: Raid Solutions and Logic
Message #153328
Hi, last month my recording HD crashed during recording process. No backup! So I decided to use mirrored HD´s (Raid1) . Is it possible to record with mirrored hd´s in Logic? Protools do not accept mirrored HD´s created with Apple´s SoftwareRAID. Any experiences with ATTO Express RAID (Software RAID)? I would use two 120GB on IDE 3-4 / G4 dual 1,25GHz Logic rocks Chuckie

I have been using 2 120Gb ATA Raid Striped drives since day one on my G4 Dual 1.25 MDD. I have never experienced any problems. I'm currently running Logic 6.3.2 & Panther. They also worked perfectly in OS 9 and in Jaguar. It's kinda nice having "one" big drive (240Gb) for solely audio. I am running my operating system from a third ATA 120Gb drive. The nice thing about the MDD G4 is that you can have multiple hard drives. Supposedly the performance of RAID striped drives is better, but i've never had it any other way so I couldn't tell you how much better comparatively without the RAID striping. Hope this helps. M-De

Nice ! Better than Apple Raid ! MIRRORED drives give you data redundancy/failure tolerance but at the cost of write performance. No software RAID mirror can give you excellent write performance and therefore excellent overall I/O with audio applications although it can certainly be adequate for your needs. Claims of increased write performance are sometimes achieved with buffering but that will actually decrease your sustained write performance. STRIPED drives give you NO DATA REDUNDANCY at all. Nada. Of course you get a boost to I/O performance out of it but not usually a huge boost. For AV applications software RAID *generally* (YMMV) is a great backup solution but a poor primary AV drive solution. And, Chuckie, if you do decide to make do with software mirrored drives then attach them to different cables so the I/O load is less. Don't put the two RAID drives on the same ATA chain because, esp. if you get high throughput drives, you'll max out the channel with one drive's data. The same applies to firewire drives too: if you spread the load across different channels/busses/slots you'll see a noticeable improvement. Slainte, -ck
