I know I've heard that it itsn't, but I'm over budget and need to
save where I can.
Can I take a 512 meg RAM chip out of my G4 and put it in the G5,
or are they entirely different protocols?
I'm sure I already know the answer but someone please tell me
it ain't true.

NO You cannot.
AT ALL... Under ANY Circumstances.
All dual G5 machines REQUIRE PC3200 DDR400 RAM installed in Pairs.
I recommend Kingston or Crucial ONLY, as being fully compatible, reliable
and well priced, especially compared to Apple who charge WELL over the odds
for the stuff.
End of discussion.

No. But G5 RAM is incredibly dirt cheap now.

There are eight slots for memory in there. Using 512Mb chips you can
get up to 4 gigs of memory, is that not enough?

I don't think the word "enough" exists for us anymore.
