Hi,
thanks for everyones help, as a MAC novice i have a few questions before i
make the plunge...
Are MAC's quite sensite like PCs with Ram...eg..if i want 2gb of ram and i
buy a MAC with 512 in it...am i better taking that out and putting two
sticks of 1gb ram in...or can i add a 1gb stick and another 512 (or 4x 512?)
Ive just bought a new audio hard drive for my PC, all it contains are wav
files, logic save files, and my sample library (a HUGE collection of
samples, sample cds, etc, in various formats) can i take this out of my PC
and fit it into the G5 to save me having to buy yet another new hard drive?
Another question that probably people who read this won't know unless i
repost under a different topic. In the latest version of Logic (and EXS) has
they fixed the sample library limitation problem? I find this a huge mistake
by Emagic, expecially when you have a massive sample Library like me...which
is the whole basis of your system. To get around this i had to buy Kontakt
to play my remaining sample libarys and CDs (which isn't great...but there
are percs of having Kontakt) I don't want to have to buy it again for MAC so
it would be great to know if this limitation is no more.
Is there a list of things that you can do on a G5 Mac running the latest
Logic and Panther versus what you can't on PC? I was suprised to read an
article about Panther in this months sound on sound for it to say that the
AKAI for the EXS24 convert doesn't work. Why is this? Are there any
advantages to using Panther? I may avoid getting a MAC till all this new
technology has ironed itself out...from what i see on the outside hardly
anything works at the minute...developers are still catching up with OSX and
half the plugins don't work in that...then theres this new AU format, now
Panther...and for all these new things the music progs seem to be suffering.
How do i go about networking my PC and MAC together?
Does Logic still run VST's or does it only run Audio Units now? What are the
advantages to AU...if any? If not why have they changed from VST?
If anyone can think of anything else i should think about before i make the
PC to Mac jump please let me know...i want to make sure i cover everything
and can carry on working as normal after the switch...

This was discussed on the list today. It has to be a S-ATA drive to
go into a G5.

Not on OSX - AU only, or use the FXpansion wrapper, so long as the
VST plugs are for OSX.

I suggest you take a *good* look through the LUG archive, there have
been literally hundreds of posts dealing with these various issues,
the information is all there ....

You should be able to use the 512MB stick that comes with your G5 Mac,
and then buy 3 additional 512MB sticks to get you to the 2 Ghz. Just
make sure you buy from a dealer that knows you're installing the
3200PC SDRAM into a Mac G5.

If you bought a brand new SATA drive, then yes. If not, you won't be
able to use it. G5's are SATA only. You can also use FW 400 and FW 800
for inexpensive back-up or external recording drives.
Can't help you much with the EXS, when comparing it to the PC version.
EXS 24 should be able to do everything you want to do on a Mac G5.
Kontakt should also work on your Mac, once you download the proper
version for OS X.
> How do i go about networking my PC and MAC together?
I know you can run Gigasampler on a PC from a Mac, but as far as
completely compatible networking for Music between PC and Mac, that
can't be done with Logic AFAIK.

Audio Units are better sounding than VST, and you can manipulate the
parameters more effectively. There are articles on the comparisons
between AU and VST, if you do an internet search. AU is defintely the
future of plug-ins. My AU plug-ins all perform flawlessly. FXpansion
allows you to use VSTs with OS X, and it works perfectly. I use it for
Battery and Autotune 3.25.

A search on this forum will discuss this better than I can in a few
words. The G5 is a class act, and will only improve in the months and
years to come.
Cheers

Really? Interesting - would you care to elaborate?

This is supposedly easier with OSX, though i havent tried as yet.

You sound a little confused. Gigasampler PCs are run like any other
synth or outboard module in mac-based studios, i.e. over midi.
Processor-sharing_should_be possible with VST plugs and FX Teleport,
but the hornets nest awaiting scares me - AU-VST wrapper etc etc

:-) Not true.

:-) :-) Yes, on Logic.

Regardless of what anyone says a big transition like this is rarely
painless and will take a lot longer than you think. Just plan ahead
as much as poss.

Make sure you have file sharing turned on. Do a get info on the drive you
want to share (OSX I assume) and enable reading and writing for all. Do the
same on the PC. In the networking control pannel, enable file sharing.
Next, Right click on the drive or folder you want to share, in XP, go to the
sharing tab and enable it to the degree you want. Hook them up via a
network cable or router. In XP go to my network places under my computer,
click on view workgroup computers and when the icon for the mac shows up,
create a folder that you can just double click on to get through for the
future. On the mac, open up the "go" menu item and navigate to the
network
and in a few seconds the PC will pop up in the file finder, double click,
put in your password and that should do it.

Here's the discussion on the OS X Audio Forum that answers all the
questions about AU vs VST on OS X.
http://www.osxaudio.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pE249#45249
Then, you can make your own decision.
All I can say is that this thread convinced me, and I've had nothing
but success with Audio Unit Plug-Ins and OS X.

Sorry... it has to be third party independent before I believe
any more of the (insert computer company name here) hype. Besides the
writer admits to being totally biased.
And it says nothing at all about AUs aounding better.

Wrong. There's nothing inherent in the AU spec which
makes them sound magically better than the VST spec.
>and you can manipulate the parameters more effectively
Where did you hear this? There are many advantages to the AU
spec, but this isn't one of them. One major advantage
to the AU spec is that it is channel scalable. In other
words, a programmer just needs to make one version
and voila... you have mono, stereo and surround variations.
With VST the programmer needs to make a different version
for every amount of channels. So what ends up happening often
is that you get ONLY a stereo version but when you instanciate
it in mono you are really still using up the DSP horsepower that
the stereo version hogged up.

Yes this is a great feature of AU there is just one annoying thing
and that is that a lot of makers still haven't taken advantage of it
and are making plugins that only instanciate as mono->stereo or
stereo.

I'm doing it here every day. My G5 is talking very well with the XP pc's on
my ether net LAN. It never worked with Jaguar but as soon as I got Panther
the Mac took the plunge into the MS network.
For details on setting things up, please see James Ryan's excellent post.

This is NOT accurate. With the G5, memory must be installed in pairs.
A new "stock" G5 comes with a pair of 256 mb DIMMS.

Hello,
does anybody know how to install vst instruments (steinberg halion
strings, d'cota, virtual guitar, the grand)
under Panther on a G4 Powerbook? I have downloaded all recent updates
already from the steinberg-website and followed the manual-instructions
to place the vst-instruments in the "VSTPLUGINS" file in the same
file
where the logic programm is located, but the don't appear in logic.
Please help!
Thanx & Regards, guido

Logic on OSX does not support the VST format. You'll need to convert them to
Audio
Units. You can buy this utility for that task:

Seems this is the last of your questions no-one has replied to yet
:). The answer is no, the problem is still there.

This is correct, if you're getting 2 sticks of 256MB from Apple. My
math was right, but my application was wrong.
So, you'd need one pair of the 512MB sticks and one more pair of the
256MB sticks to get yourself the 2 Gigs of SDRAM that you wanted.
At that point you'd be using 6 of the 8 SDRAM slots on your G5.
My personal decision was to buy 4 sticks of the 512MB 3200PC SDRAM
for the G5, preinstalled. But, you WILL save money installing your own.
Good Luck.

I ordered my G5 from apple with 2 X 512mb in then ordered 6 X 512mb from
http://www.transintl.com/ (use the drop down menu to find
"Desktops" and in
the page that comes up you'll se G5's) Best price I could find, past
experience with them is superb (I've equipped 6 macs from these people!) and
the quality and speed is second to none. I'm in the UK but I buy all my RAM
mail order from these guys as it's cheaper and better than I can find in the
UK.
