Subject: Effects and TDM system
Message #153199
Hi, Is there a way to use Logic effects (Space Designer, etc.) on Audio Tracks? The SD manual says it can be used on tracks, busses, aux objects, master outputs, inputs or instrument channels. Does that not apply to TDM systems? Is there another way to boot Logic that will allow this? Direct IO, Mac, etc., and disable DAE and DTDM... or is there something I can buy like "Host TDM Enabler" that will accomplish this? Any input would be helpful, Cobb

You ought to subscribe to the logic-tdm list also at yahoogroups.com. There you'll find only TDM users, where your question wouldn't puzzle the vast majority of users. The best way to share native and TDM DSP back and forth is to buy some kind of native interface (like RME or MOTU) and digitally route the signals back and forth between the TDM engine and the native engine. For example, A MOTU 828 can be connected to an ADAT Bridge via lightpipe connection for 8 channels of bi-directional communication. This means that audio can travel to and from the TDM engine to the native engine. So you could set up a send/return thing for example. You can do this in software (by getting Emagic's ESB: you'll need a MIX or HD card for this), but the communication is only one way: from native to TDM but not back. If you disable the DAE driver and activate the Direct i/o driver then you forfeit all TDM horsepower. You'll just have the equivalent of a native rig that happens to use your Digidesign i/o. This could actually be OK if you started out with a very tiny TDM rig (say, a PT3 with only one Farm) but have it in a powerful dual G4 (won't work in a G5). Then the DSP horsepower of the native engine will very much supersede the relatively paltry DSP horsepower of the one DSP Farm. But then you won't be able to run TDM plugins at all (some TDM plugins aren't available for native: VST or AudioUnits). f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!"

Alternatively just create a layer with DTDM that you pipe into the DAE layer via ESB. Its not the greatest limitation having the order of plugins enforced, and you can always bounce files and use them with DTDM. You will likely end up using the TDM plugs most of the time. Adam

That's exactly what I said above in the second paragraph, but you've spelled it out in more detail. I certainly hope that ESB (Emagic System Bridge) is enhanced someday to allow bi-directional streaming. If it can be done by physically routing the audio with cables (as I mentioned in my first paragraph), it ought to be possible in software, right? Ultimately, the best way will be when native plugins and TDM plugins can be freely instanciated anywhere, and the engine underneath worries about all the routing. f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!"

Thanks, I managed to get it working in software with your help. Cobb

>I certainly hope that ESB (Emagic System Bridge) is >enhanced someday to allow bi-directional streaming. That would be excellent. Not looking good though in the current political climate. I'm sure there could a "nicer" way to do this all in software - the ESB is good because there is no alternative that i'm aware of. I'd love to see something like a TDM folder in the fx insert slots similar to the native VST one. Adam
