Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a 2gh G5 and netoworking it up to my PC and using FX
Teleport when it comes out for the MAC so i can still access many of my PC
only plugins and progs i have for it.
The inital computer price isn't too bad at £2,200....but suddenly it
doubles
when you add more more ram and a monitor!! First things first can i buy 3rd
party G5 ram that will work the same for cheaper? Ideally i'd like 2gb in
the machine, so can i buy it with 512 from Apple then add my own. Also will
any flat panel LCD monitor work with the G5's port because you can buy a
30"
LCD screen for the same price as Apples 20" one! So I think i know
where i'm
gonna go for that!

(p.s. could i also just use my current PC monitor for now before i get the
flat panel?)

What is the 30" screen you are considering?

You should be able to, the G4's came with an ADC-VGA adapter...I guess the
G5's come with one as well.
Thanks,

Absolutely - IMO never buy RAM directly from Apple. Some things (like
the machine itself) are worth the premium you pay for a high-quality
piece of engineering, but you can use any RAM that is a spec-match for
your particular box. I personally use crucial.com - they are not the
cheapest (but I tend to avoid no-name companies like 'e-ram.com" or
"best-e-buys.net', LOL), but much cheaper than Apple and their
reputation is impeccable.

Sure, I'm using a regular non-Apple 19" CRT.
AFAIK all Macs still have a standard VGA output and can be connected to
any CRT monitor. (I can't speak for LCD since I don't use one - the
graphic arts side of me still needs top-notch color calibration for
CMYK output, one area where LCD still doesn't quite match up to CRTs,
although it's getting much better and eventually will be there).
That having been said, a friend of mine has an Apple 20" Cinema Display
that gets me hankerin' to buy one every time I see Logic open on his
screen...!

My G4 (Quicksilver) has a VGA port on the back, no adapter necessary.

no problem..I'm using an older Sony VGA CRT
For Memory, be careful. I had to take memory back to 2 different
locations. I suggest you go to Crucial.com. Use their memory
selector. They have a good price and compatibility.

ps. you are really going to enjoy your G5!

I'm using a ViewSonic 22" CTR for my monitor with my G5 2Ghz DP. It's
fine. There's an adaptor that works great with VGA monitors. My
monitor was definitely for PC's. For sure, I will get a Flat Panel as
soon as they come down in price.
With the G5's you can easily set-up 2 monitors with the on board ATI
9600 card that comes stock with your Mac. There's also a Pro 9800 ATI
Video card available if you need it.
RAM can be purchased for $80 to $100.00 (for 512MB PC3200 400DDR
SDRAM), depending on where you buy it. Crucial.com is good, so is OWC.com.
Make sure you specifically tell whomever you buy the RAM from, that it
will be going into a G5 Macintosh. The G5's and OS X in general, are
very fussy about RAM, and will not function properly without 100%
compatible RAM.
Other than that.....have fun......I am!!
Cheers

Yes, My G5 came with one. But for my second screen I had to buy an extra
adapter.

Don't get your RAM from Apple!!! You'll pay way
too much. I get all my RAM, hard drives, etc,
through Other World Computing
(http://www.macsales.com/), and they're cheap and
have great service.

You can use any flat panel with the G5, you just
might need an adaptor. I use a Samsung 191T as my
main monitor, which is a great looking monitor,
and a cheap Office Depot special as a 2nd
monitor. The G5 ships with a DVI to VGA adaptor,
if you need VGA, the other monitor port is ADC,
which is Apple's proprietary format, but you can
get ADC to DVI or ADC to VGA adaptors.

Yup. Again, you might need an adaptor.

All newer Macs have an ADC connector (since all Apple monitors are now LCD
with ADC connectors) plus a DVI connector if it is a dual display card.
The 18 G4s we purchased last year all had this, plus the ADC-VGA adapter.
I expect G5s would be the same.

Go in any PC shop !
1 GB module are too expensive at the moment, the best is to get 2x512
modules (you must buy them by pair)

The G5 2x2ghz ATI has a VGA adaptator, you can buy a DVI / VGA for a few
£
is you have a second monitor

Does the G5 ship with a DVI to VGA adapter?
The G4 shipped with an ADC to VGA adapter.
Just checking.

Every G4 (with a DVI connection) that I've ever
seen ships with a DVI->VGA adaptor.
Every G5 that I've seen ships with a DVI->VGA adaptor.
I've never known Apple to include a free ADC->VGA adaptor.
ADC->VGA adaptors are readily available from Gefen
and others.
