Yes, quite an annoying oversight with relation to audio instruments. Just to be clear, the track just has to be selected in the arrange. I realize this automatically record-enables it, but if you happen to have your record buttons hidden, you can still activate the Matrix playback by simply selecting the track.

When working with /virtual/ instruments (such as the EXS), the instrument's track needs to be selected in Arrange in order to hear clicked notes in Matrix.
