Jay, can you please describe what you are seeing actually? If I understood right, you mentioned only, what you are not able to do. First guess: maybe "Interpretation" or "No Overlap" turned on?

I can insert a dotted half note E in the bass of the -8 treble clef staff, however, when I insert an 8th note E an octave higher on the same beat the dotted half note E changes into an 8th note as well.I'm inserting notes via mouse and onscreen keyboard.
