So use the mute *tool* on the previously-recorded audio region(s)
before you record "over" them. As there's no good way to select
stacked takes like this (no "select through" or "send to
back" or
whatever), things can get a bit tricky later. It may also be helpful
to stop thinking of it like a tape recording. Underneath does not
necessarily mean it won't play, I believe the first audio region to
start will play...?
Cycle record in auto mute/auto create mode really may be what you
want if you are doing lots of takes & want to keep them all for later
comping together of the best bits.
Or if you just want to keep the earlier take for safety, you can hit
delete after recording and tell Logic to keep the newly-recorded file
(rather than deleting it from disk), which will then be removed from
the Arrange window but still available in the Audio window. It can be
dragged back into Arrange whenever you need, then use "regions to
original record position" to place it...
Or if the take really was utter crap, hit delete, answer yes to
"delete it from disk" & record again.
There may also be a key command for "record again" which you
should
check out? I don't have the dongle with me, can't check...
