Hi all,
I'm getting ready to move to Thailand early next year and as such am
in the process of selling all my equipment and am going to be narrowing it
down to just my Nord mod, Logic, and a 15" 1Ghz Powerbook.
Now the audio interface that so far looks the best for this is the M-Audio
FireWire 410. Both in terms of flexibility and price.
What I'm wondering is: Have any of you had any problems with the M-Audio
FireWire 410 and Logic and a Powerbook?
Regards,

you may like to look at the motu-mac archives for some (possibly
relevant) 410 problems.

There have been a few thread on this list about that. The 410 uses high
amount of cpu (users reported between 20 and 30 %!). I would prefer to
go for a MOTU FW interface (maybe used). They are not bus powered, but
M-AUdio is not exactely know as a company that delivers brilliant Mac
drivers.

Hi there,
I certainly hope so :-) Going to be in Bangkok at first then hopefully find
a nice beach to live on.

Whoah! That's not good at all, after hearing this, and following up on the
sugestions of other posters here I've come to think that the FireWire 410 is
not the way to go.

Somebody that i have a lot of respect for suggested the Motu 828 to me, I
thought it was out of my price range but after checking ebay it seems that
the Mk1 version would be in my price range. Do you or anybody else on the
list think this would be a better way to go with a powerbook and Logic
instead of a Emagic EMI 6|2 m?
Thanks to all for help and suggestions,

I've tried understanding how the outputs of VST multi instruments (DR008
in this case) are routed through the Logic Audio path, by reading
everything I could find in the 5.0 manual and online help. Neither seems
to say very much, and what is said is quite confusing. Can anyone help
me out?

You are going to have to spell out the problem. Where are you getting hung
up?

FAQ 20.4 might be helpful...

Sorry, I'm being stupid. Where can I find this FAQ? I looked quickly at
yahoogroups.com under logic-users, but didn't find anything. (I normally
read the list via a normal email client, not a yahoo).
Thanks in advance for any help!

The Logic online help said that all outputs of a multi-instruments are
routed
to outputs 1-2 "by default", but says nothing about how to change
the
default.
It also says that aux objects are used for multi _effects_ outputs
"starting
at channel 3", and only mentions VST multi _instruments_ in passing.
What
does
"starting at channel 3 mean? What happens if you are using aux objects
to
capture multi outputs with more specificity (which seems to be what you are
suppposed to do), but you have more than one VST multi-instrument. Are all
the
VST multi instruments handled identically?
On the DR-008, you can set up a variable number of multi-outputs and a
variable
number of aux outputs. Is there a distinction between "main" and
"aux"
inputs
in the VST multi-instrument spec? If so, how does Logic treat them?
Etc.

Hi Andy
Logic Users Group - Logic FAQ: http://logicfaq.omega-art.com/
(this is the first line written in every digest sent out :-)).

At the bottom of each and every LUG message :-)
>Logic Users Group - Logic FAQ: http://logicfaq.omega-art.com/
To answer your question: each VSTi has its own way of determining
what goes to which output. In the EXS for example you define outputs
in the Instrument Editor -- every zone and group can be assigned to
whichever of the 16 EXS outputs.
Insert the VSTi as a 'multi' in the mixer strip -- i.e. use the
multi-instrument entry on the insert popup menu, and not the mono or
stereo options! Then the VSTi mixer strip itself will output the 1st
2 outputs of the VSTi. Subsequent outputs (3-16 with the EXS) can be
accessed through Aux objects. If you have a Multi Instrument inserted
in some Audio-Instr mixer strip, and you have an Aux object in your
mixer, you'll see its outputs appear in the Aux's *input* popup. If
you have a multi-EXS for instance, you'll see "EXS 3-4, EXS 4-5,
..."
appear in every Aux's input popup. Simply pick the inputs you want...

Doh!

I don't think you can change the default.

By "starting at channel 3" they mean channels 1 and 2 come out of
the
instrument object itself and the rest of the channels starting at
channel 3 will appear at the inputs of the aux objects. Just
instanciate a multi instrument on, say instrument five, the go to an
aux object and click hold the input slot you should see a dropdown
menu that reads
input
bus
instrument 5 >
Now click on the arrow after instrument five and you will see another
drop down menu with a list of the outputs from multi instrument 5 it
should look like this:
input
bus
instrument 5 > 008 3 <patch name>
008 4 <patch name>
008 5 <patch name>
008 6 <patch name>
008 7 <patch name>
008 8 <patch name>
Just select the output number you want and you should be in business.
If you have also instanciated a multi instrument in instrument 6 you
should now see a list that looks like this in the drop down menu of
the aux:
input
bus
instrument 5 >
instrument 6 >
If I understand the other part of your question as you can see from
the above the outputs of each of the multi instruments *are* discrete
if that is what you were asking.
