Subject: [LUG][LAM]"Housekeeping" question for OS X'ers -slightly OT?
Message #147358
Hi Guys, Apologies if this counts as OT but this list seems to be the most informative place to get this kind of info - we creative types have strong opinions on most things! I have watched a number of threads go by on the subject of Norton and related utilities. I use Norton under OS 9 and have no complaints. With UAD's OS X support getting really close, I'm faced with the real possibility of having my studio OS X soon. I need to make a firm decision about Disk Defragmentation, Virus Protection and Data Back up. I feel that these needs differ slightly in the ProAudio world to some others. De frag is more important on an audio hard drive than on someone's word docs or Photoshop files (true or false?) so the Defrag tool needs to be good. Also I have hard disk authorisations that mustn't be damaged. Some virus protection operates invisibly in the back ground and slows down audio performance as a result. I really don't want that! Something I can check suspicious downloads with and investigate my system if it misbehaves is what I want. Back-up ideally would be something which, once set up, would back up any changed files at the end of each day. Perfect would be something I set running when I leave the studio, that does the business then shuts the mac down. What is the Lug's collective wisdom on these issues? I finally got commercial use permission for my studio, I don't want to bring it to it's knees with system problems! All input very much appreciated Gareth

There are NO reported OSX-capable viruses to date. None. Nada. Antivirus software for OS X is a marketing scam. Avoid Norton-anything like the plague on OS X (OS 9 too IMO). It'll mess you up. Use the OS X Disk Utility's "repair permissions" after installs, perhaps Disk Warrior for any disk problems. > Back-up ideally would be something which, once set up, would back up > any changed files at the end of each day. Perfect would be something > I set running when I leave the studio, that does the business then > shuts the mac down. Retrospect. It can't shut the Mac down by itself in OS X (it can possibly be accomplished with a backup-end Applescript if you must), but there's really not much reason to shut OS X down anyway, just let it all sleep if all the hardware supports it. I just read through and I'm convinced now, not to bother with defrag. I'll also make sure I keep my drives from getting to full in future. Now how do we get that C.K chap to join this group?! Cheers Gareth

Don't know what "collective wisdom" will be here, but my favorite apps are Disk Warrior for HD maintenance, Retrospect for backups and Virex for virus protection (don't know the latter is the best solution out there, but I got if free as a .Mac member and never had a virus related issue so far). Also, I have completely removed any trace of Norton applications from my machine after NDD and then SD and even NAV have completely destroyed my OS X partition several times. Best, Andy

Haun, and obvious authority on the subject. No more defragging! Hoooray! thanks! James
