Subject: [GEN] 24 to 16 bit conversion problem
Message #147218
ok, I'm on a MacG4 1.25 dual, Logic Platinum 6. Motu 24 I/O, neumann trues, high quality mics, recording at 24/48 When I'm mixing, the sound through my monitors is pristine and gorgeous. When I try to mix down to 16/44.1 wav's to use on my IBM machine, I get a horrid distorted sound. WHY? I've tried all the dithering options, and they're still awful. Is this a 48 to 44.1 problem? It sounds like a clipping distortion, but nowhere along the chain are there any indications of overload, and the waveform looks fine....but the audio is absolutely horrible. I need to have a way to mix to 16/44.1 for cd's and mp3's, otherwise recording in 24-bit is useless. Also, as a side note, when I tried to make an interleaved L+R wave file, it came out completely blank. Please, please, please help. slondo1@... slondo1 - AIM & yahoo -Ben

This is a reply to #147218.
Dear Ben This is a common one. Mix down to SD11 or Aiff 16 bit, using Power Dither (I find 2 the best for orchestral samples) and then convert to .wav using Soundjam or Barbabatch. Logic has often had trouble boun cing to .wavs. Good luck Brian
