Subject: [GEN] 16 bit Samples...Mixing...& Dithering
Message #145502
Hi All A simple but serious question for LOGIC users... I use downloaded samples that are 16bit and I am wondering ...when mixing with recorded audio, 24bit... Do I Dither the 24bit Audio files to 16bit..first Then bounce the Dithered file with the original 16bit files? Or can I bounce both together and dither at the same time... I remember reading dithering files twice is not too good. For all of us that use samples in EXS24 or other samplers And most samples are only 16bit, this is a constant concern. How does everyone deal with this? Midimantra G4Mac, 512r, Motu828, EMES, LP5...

Subject: [LUG] [GEN] Dithering Question???

I have the Waves L2 Hardware Limiter and I am routing the Master Output(1-2) through the L2 for Bit Depth Reduction and dithering via the I/O plug-in. When I want to route the signal back into Logic and use Logic's bounce process for the sake of having the audio file in the computer, what setting do I use on the Bit Depth in the bounce window so that it does not affect or diminish what I have already done witht the L2? In other words, if I'm sending a 24bit signal out to the L2 and sending a 16bit signal (dithered) back into Logic, do I set Logic to 16bit and dithering to "none" in order to not change anything the L2 has already done? Thank you in advance. M-De __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free, easy-to-use web site design software http://sitebuilder.yahoo.com

When I want to route > the signal back into Logic and use Logic's bounce process > for the sake of having the audio file in the computer As long as the bounce contains ONLY the returned signal from the L2, all levels from the i/o plugin return level to the output fader are at unity gain, and no further processing is being done, then you should bounce to the same bit depth as the L2 output, with no dither. In theory you should get an exact copy of the L2 output. John Pitcairn
