Actually I think you had it right the first time traditionally Widows
are more fun.

Ha, ha. I read too fast to get that typo ;-) Now it all makes sense.
How come you pick up Windows now? I switched Mac --> Windows four years
ago but now I'm switching back because of the G5 and the serious Apple
product line of crative sofware tools.

Hi,
I'm trying out a M-Audio Audiophile USB interface. Audio goes fine wiht
Logic 5.5.1 under Windows XP but the USB midi driver does not work at
all. However there is no problems at all with the Audiophile midi driver
in Ableton Live. Any ideas? A known issue?
Best wishes

Hi LUGgers,
With no affordable Mac G5 laptops around I'm looking into other
alternatives for portability outside the studio. Right now there is a
good price for a Dell laptop:
IntelR PentiumR 4 cpu 2,40GHz
512 MB RAM
14,1" TFT XGA LCD monitor (1024x768)
20GB ATA-100 drive
Integrerat 8x DVD-ROM
Anyone with experience of Dell? (my own Dell experiences are horrible,
but this was many years ago with second hand machines).
Best wishes

Personally I don't like Dell, but together with Fuitsu-Siemens it's supposed
to be the best around these days... I good friend of mine (works on Nuendo)
went for Dell and is very happy.

I don't have any experience with Dell laptops, but we have 60+ 1U,
2U and 4U Dell PowerEdge servers at my work which have been
extremely reliable.
If you do want a G5 laptop eventually, you might consider finding
someplace to lease a laptop from for now. At least here in the US,
leasing hardware seems to be a pretty big thing right now and is
quite affordable. Plus you might be able to find someplace that
would lease you a laptop, but let you return it in a month or so if
you can't get it to work glitch-free with your sound card.
Laptops are a bit tricky though, due to shared memory, etc. I'd like
a laptop some day, but haven't had a chance to get one yet... In the
past when researching what to possibly get, RME's tech info section
of their website as well as the RME newsgroup have been extremely
helpful in finding the make/model of a reliable laptop suitable for
being a Windows DAW.

I've done nothing but recoding on laptops for the past 4 years (I don't
even own a desktop any more). Though I've switched to Macintosh some
time ago I have had to use Windows based laptops for various jobs over
the years. If I was given the choice by my employer I would settle for
nothing but Dell. I would avoid the Inspiron line though. Ya, It has
all the newest PC junk but that's not what you need, you want
reliability. I always went for the Latitude line of laptops. They are
built with hardware that is known to have rock-solid drivers and proven
field reliability. Yea, they are a but heavy, but I have dropped mine
from a table during a presentation and just picked it back up. Never a
problem. Think about it if you have to have a Windows PC otherwise
save a get a Mac.

FYI: Mac laptops (Powerbook) run the G4 processor and the G3 processor
(iBook). I run Logic Audio on one of my older G3 powerbooks (2000
Lombard) with out a hitch (have to watch the virtual instruments
though) and Logic Platinum on my Ti Powerbook (1GHz G4) just get the
RAM up there.

Hi,
I would really recommend SONY VAIO laptops if you can afford them.
If not, the cheapest solution is Clevo I think.
The culprit (at least for me) is to have an S/PDIF digital in/out, so you
can avoid the low-quality converters of the built-in soundcard.
Thisway you can even use the machine without an external soundcard
and no loss of quality.
The Clevo has it on some of it's models.
The second thing is to check the chipset and avoid VIA !
Stick with Intel for peace and happiness....

This is a very important point! For goodness' sake, whatever laptop
you might buy, it is fundamental that it has a seperate graphic chip.
My old "no name" P3 1000 laptop(I don't use it for audio) is
roughly
equivalent to a P III 500, for this very reason ..

I wouldn't buy anything but RME - excellent company, IMHO
kind regards

I have a Sony Vaio and a Dell labtop myself. I like the Dell better and tech
support for the Dell if far supreme. Don't get me wrong if you want to find
driver updates and support on Sony's site you can but it's an extreme pain
in the ass. Dell is great for driver updates and bios updates especially if
you change your OS.
Jazz-e
my inspiron 8200 has a spdif out on it as well...you have to use this
breakout cable though.

I've just switched to a PC, and HP tech has been very good to deal with. I
would recommend HP in half a second.
