Somehow I always have the feeling that when using Logic & mixing
internally, the sound doesn't have the same depth, but I would not
really expect that either:
You can't really expect a £700 software & maybe Waves/
Bombfactory, etc
Plug Ins to have the same depth than an Neve Desk, Pultec EQs & Comps,
etc
I also have to say that I don't like ProTools Converters (that is the
888s, the new HD converters actually impressed me!). We also once did a
listening test in the studio & using Logic native vs. on PT TDM
hardware, seemed to sound better. We thought this might be due to the
fact that Logic is calculating with floating point, whereas PT uses
fixed Point (limitation of the hardware). The difference was very
subtle & quite subjective I'd say & I'm sure some people would not
agree. This was a PT Mix system, I didn't do that test with an HD
system. The effect became more noticeable the more effects you used
(i.e. Logic having a better/nicer sound than ProTools).
That said however: the difference is subtle & I guess 95-99% of people
will not notice this. I also think you will most notice it on a good
system (good speakers, good amp, etc). Maybe I'm a bit anal about this,
but I just LOVE a great deep sound, where you have the feeling that you
sit within the music & not in front of speakers ;-))
Cheers,
Gilles
P.S: One evening in the studio we listened to Lenny Kravitz Best of &
90% of the time we could hear whether it was recorded/mixed on analog
or digital!!! (Please don't kill me know, I DEFINITELY DON"T want to
start a discussion analog vs. digital...)
