Hi List,
I have a Proteus 1 and last night I found that in the v5 multisets a
multi-instrument for the Pro 1 was made.
The maker has it set up for 2 banks, one for sounds 0-127, the second for
sounds 128-191.
Here is the catch though: the Pro1 doesn't respond to the second bank
changes.
It still selects the first bank, for example even if I select sound 128, the
Proteus changes to sound 0.
I'm not surprised by the Proteus behavior since I read in the manual that
the
Pro1 cannot "normally" access program change numbers over 127 and
that you
can "re-map" the sounds using the MASTER MENU of the Proteus, but
you can
only assign 127 different sounds to the 127 program change numbers.
(You know, like the Proteus 1 was made before "new" MIDI banks
were made?)
Ok, so providing that my rambling above makes sense to somebody here are my
actual questions:
1) Is there a way in the Environment to "add" value to the program
change and
make the Proteus 1 select those 128-191 patches?
2) If not then why was does the multiset for the Pro1 even include the
second
bank?
Is it just for my ease of use if I did want to remap some of the sounds
inside the Pro1?
I suspect that question 1 can't be done, but then again, the Pro 1 manual
later says that "Banks may be requested using the preset request
command and
the appropriate preset code listed below"
And also maybe the Environment gurus out there can help a novice like me.
Well, my long post is over now...hope I didn't forget anything ... and hope
I
was clear in what I am looking to do.
Regards,
Ken kirk

Hi Ken,
I remember accessing all Poteus 1 sounds from Logic 3.6 on Mac many
years ago. I haven't used my Proteus 1 since then but if my memory
serves me well it was a certain environment I donwloaded somewhere. Have
you been checking out www.swiftkick.com ?
Best wishes

I don't know the Proteus at all, so this is just a wild guess, but it
sounds as if the "preset code listed below" _is_ precisely some
sort
of bank-change command or something which you'd have to use to access
prg 128 and up. Would it be possible to post this "preset
request..." bit of your Proteus manual? That way some of us might be
able to make a more informed guess as to what you should do.

The old Proteii don't support bank shifting, but you can
indeed use Sysex to access patches above 127.
There is an environment at <www.swiftkick.com> that
does this. From a user perspective, banks are still
accessed the normal way (through a multi-instrument)
but there are some transformers and stuff behind the
scenes doing all the conversion. I've been using it for
about 9 years now.

The are several songs in there with environments for bank switching
on the old proteuses (proteii, proteaux, ...)
