Subject: [LUG] [LAM] .aif suffix - can I lose it?
Message #136460
Is there any way to use AIFFs and not have Logic append the ".aif" suffix? I like to use AIFFS cos I have other apps which need them, and I don't want the suffix so that when I take the text from Logic, it can be pasted into a playlist without me having to tidy it up manually afterwards. I guess the reason it does it is that although the Mac can read WAVs, PCs need the .aif suffix to lknow what they are dealing with, but i am only using it on a Mac and woould prefer to do without it. I'm not sure I understand your reasoning. Does the .aif extension interfere with your ability to use the audio file in other apps? I don't see why it would. Apple currently is recommending that the .aif extension (and all other extensions) be left intact. OS X really likes file extensions, and Apple recommends that developers Recently, when I upgraded to Logic 6, many of my ESX24 patches seemed to disappear. When I invesigated it, I realised that the patches in my "Sampler Instruments" folder that lacked the .exs extension weren't being recognised. When I added the .exs extension, the EXS24 was able to see them all once again. I would imagine that something similar might happen to your AIFF files if you take their extension away. If you leave the extension, then your Mac will have no trouble identifying what the file is. I hate file extensions too. I think they are dumb. But Apple has embraced them. If you want to know more about Apple, file extensions, and metadata, check out this fascinating article by John Siracuse at ARS Technica: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/01q3/metadata/metadata-1.html I hope this helps, Charles
