Hi again, almost answering my own email here... 8(I)
I just been trying out the Renn Pack from Waves, also the Restoration Pack
(it came in handy for something I may do 1 or 2X a year so can't see the
value in buying) ....But....
When I plugged in the Ren Reverb.......boy what a nice sounding verb...
It's almost dangerous for us small budget players to listen to these demos.
Looks like I'll have to go sell my body somewhere and make some quick cash.
So why after using these quality plugins do (no offence meant) Logic
processors sound so crappy? Or have I been spoilt with years of recording in
top flight studios in Australia?
How is it some companies can make algorithms sound better than others?
Will Logic make better sounding plugins?
Or will they just concentrate on make a great recording program?
It is great to have a suite of useful processors to get you started but
seriously, for professional sound applications, I personally would not use
them...........
....What do you think?
Are these extra bits just filler to you?
I personally think that the basic Logic Program and the EX24 are great.
I don't think too much of the built in Synths, ES1, ES2, EME, ESM, ESP and
the others that represent a replica of sounds, clavinet, piano, organ, I
suppose are useful to those that need them.
I use the Absynth, ReFX Beast & Plasticz and mostly samples and always
struggle to get a decent bass sound, perhaps that's because I'm a bass
player of 30years and fussy.
Anyway I know a lot of this falls outside of technical issues to do with
using logic, but technical issues are solvable. In the area of great sound
it is always a grey area that¹s very much influenced by your own
personal
experience and professional taste.
It would be interesting to hear replies on this from Professional Studio
guys and Home Studio guys.

If you gave a skilled engineer and producer nothing but Logic, its
internal synths, internal plug ins, with great converters, mics and
preamps the level of quality would match the level of quality you
could achieve on any system in the world. There is nothing wrong with
Logic's effects as they do exactly what they claim. Thats a fact.
Also, if you're a bass player, go to www.yellowtools.com. Keep an eye
out for Majestic E-Basses.
Sincerely,
Ken

I disagree. Logics reverb is shit, and the Fat EQ, and the compressor. The
phaser isn't really useable. Waves REN verb is a big improvement IMHO. Waves
eq and compression way nicer too.
I haven't tryed all the other plugs yet.
Dont feed the trolls....

The Waves plugs are very nice indeed. That's because it's their specialty,
not Emagic's. I've tried doing the same type of work with Logic plugs, but
after spending quite a bit of time trying to set up Logic's plugs to sound
like the Waves plugs sounded, I concluded it was not worth the time. Not
that you can't get a good sound with Logic's plugs, but but the Waves plugs
get you to a good sound very fast.
If you're a bass player I think you'd prefer Renn Bass over logic's
compressor when trying to get a good bass sound, yes?

Emagic don't have a great compressor yet, but in my opinion,
their new v6 Channel EQ is world class. Also the tape delay
continues to get about 5-10 instances in every song - a unique
plug. I also love the E-magic distortions.

Hi,
I would classify myself as a home studio guy - in practice for about 3
years.
As far a logics plugs go, I use them for a certain sound, but if i can use
renverb, I do-normally on a bus for vocals and maybe a little on the drums.
Sometimes I use a little goldverb for guitars as well. RCL is the best comp
i've heard and kicks the logic compressor. I always had problems getting a
good snare in a mix until RCL.
Tape delay is in constant use here.
I do like the logic instruments for some things - evp88 is good if you put
some effects on it - ES2 is good for techno basses.

Waves REN verb is very thick. I rarely hear reverbs on records that
sound so thick anymore. The way I work, all I really need is a high
quality EQ because I usually use it in conjunction with the rest of
my effects, especially when it comes to compressing vocals. Thats the
way I was trained so I do what I know how. I don't know if you're a
Mac User but if so, try the Channel EQ in Logic 6 and the Apple AU
Reverb(surprisingly). As for the phaser, again, it does what it
claims to do. Perhaps your problem is that you're relying on presets.
Thats something Emagic shortchanged on in comparison to the other
effects designers. However, its not a problem if you know what sound
you are looking for and you spend some time to understand all of the
parameters. They work for me and my ears but for you maybe they don't
and I respect that.
Sincerely,
Ken
The Project Manager finds all my Plug-In Settings files for Emagic
plugins, but NONE of the settings for third party Instruments or VST
plugins of any kind. (obviously, the file types are correct as they
were created in Logic)
In fact, the browser on the left shows only native plug-in folders
and none of the other folders (eg Atmosphere, FM7, Absynth etc etc)
Has anyone else experienced this?
If this can be verified, I'll do a bug report.
Regards - Colin
PS - Apart from this problem (so far), the Project manager is *awesome*

As for reverb, I love Waves, but I also like EnVerb very much :)!
Logic's Stereo delay is essential.
There is great stuff under the Logic menu, but compression and EQ still
belong to Waves - until Emagic proves me wrong with v6. But they can't cause
they STILL HAVEN'T DELIVERED THE DAMN THING!!!
Anyway,
Eric
