Hi folks,
I wonder if anyone has had the same experience. I rang MOTU re: some sync
questions with my current gear (lots of MOTU h/w) and Logic.
After finding out that the best sync I can get between two setups is MTC
from laptop to desktop I was also assailed with a sales pitch for DP -
pointing out the sample inaccuracies and the resolution of logic being
inferior to DP.
I wonder to myself - if Emagic are owned by Apple wouldn't it be more likely
that on an application level that Emagic would have a better crack at a
'perfect fit' with OSX and it's promised bounty?
anyone help me feel better about the 'exactitude' and general excellence of
Logic's timing in comparison to DP?
I use Logic OSX - motu 896, motu 2408II*2, motu AV timepiece, MOTU
fastlane....
Many thanks
Anthony

They WOULD say that, wouldn't they?

Not necessarily. <snipped by admin> they don't have all kinds
of hidden secret sub-OS level calls, especially when it comes to
CoreAudio and CoreMIDI. These APIs are freely available to any
developer to use however they like. DP is a fine application and so
is Logic. I would not trust either company to give me reasons why
NOT to buy the competitor's product.

It depends completely on what you are doing with it. I was very
skeptical of Logic's "sample accurate" sync for VSTi's when I
first
started using it, but at this point i just use the arrange window to
trim loops at beat divisions without even opening the sound file. In
regard to MIDI timing, it seems generally fine and I use a crappy
MidiSport 2x2 which offers no timestamping capabilities. I'm not
sure if Logic supports MOTU MIDI timestamping or not, but I've heard
good things about the Emagic timestamping MIDI devices like the AMT.
Anyway I know just as many people who use DP and swear it kicks
Logic's butt as I know people who use Logic and say DP sucks. So my
guess is they are both competely fine and it's just a matter of
personal preference. I use Logic and have never once had a problem
with timing.

Well - in which case, we shouldn't mention that DP has a soft synth timing
resolution of about 11ms at best then. Or the shocking problems I've had
with MTP-AVs not resolving to timecode properly.
That's not to say that Logic is flawless in all these respects (far from it
in some respects) - but certainly the soft synth timing in Logic is _far_
superior to DP.
