Well, that's exactly what I want. So I guess the answer to my original
question is "yes".

That's because you keep misreading people's posts. I don't expect a $1000
card to do everything protools does. I have a reasonable number of
specific expectations, and it sounds like they are most (if not all)
possible. Just because YOUR needs exceed what is possible in a native
system doesn't mean that there are others who can accomplish everything
they need to with a native system.
When you can get

I'm trying to discuss a specific aspect of something and I guess you can't
find enough bad things to say about it, so you need to keep bringing in
other complaints that aren't relevant to me. Sure there are problems in
host-based systems, but there are also problems with dsp-based systems.
And depending what the user's needs are, the problems may be unworkable, or
they may be irrelavent.
