Subject: [LAM] Diving in head first! DP to Logic 6 and EXS24
Message #134154
Ok I decided to come over to Logic and I'm not just sticking my toe in the water, I'm diving in head first! I just purchased Logic 5.5 (ordered upgrade to Logic 6) and all the Synths (EXS24, ES2, EVB3, EVD6, and EVP88) and have my order in for the VSL library for EXS24. For Logic 6 I've ordered a new G4 1.42 Ghz with two GIG of RAM and two 20" Cinema Displays. By the time my G4 arrives Logic 6 should be in my hands so I'll just wait to install Logic 6 and run it all in OSX. I have a couple questions for you experienced Logic users. - The manual set-up with Logic 5.5 (Logic 4 manual and three Logic 5 addendum) isn't making the switch over overly easy. It seems odd to read a version 4.0 manual when I'll be using version 6 within the next few weeks. --- Any recommendations on how to use the manuals and addendum (should I read the 3 year old 4.0 manual)? --- Should I just focus on the version 5 addendum and wait for the Logic 6 manual to be released? --- Any word on when the Logic 6 manual will be released? --- Any "highly" recommended Logic books/videos? - What would you recommend for the optimum audio and EXS24 mk II hard drive set-up with the G4 1.42 GIG? It has an ATA 100 bus (master/slave) and ATA 66 bus (master/slave) and comes with one 120GIG 7200 RPM drive on the AT 100 bus. --- Would EXS24 get better disk streaming performance from another ATA 100 drive (slave) on the ATA 100 bus or an ATA 100 or 66 on the ATA 66 bus (Master)? --- Does an 8 meg cache make a big difference over a 2 meg cache when it comes to audio and disk streaming? --- Which ATA bus for audio? for disk streaming? Thanks Mike

Mike- I'm in the same boat as you are, DP to Logic, and the switch has been a nightmare. I eventually resorted to posting here for a paid tutor. I got ten reponses (6 by phone, 4 e-mail) in less than a day from some very nice people! If you're using Pro-Tools HD, you need to buy some more software (PT- HD Extension and ESB-TDM Bridge - about $700) to get Logic to recognize your hardware. I ordered mine (weeks for the newly released "TDM Collection"!) and won't be having my "tutor" come in until it arrives. Had he not told me about this, I don't know how long I would have continued to pull my hair out, as the manual makes no mention of additional software, though the manual DOES tell you how to set preferences if you're using PT-HD! I still can't get Logic to recognize my MIDI Time Pieces (MOTU), but the guy tells me that shouldn't be a problem, so I'll just wait til he comes. Like you, I'm also running two monitors (Apple Cinema HD 23"). I've learned a lot in the process, so if you have troubles in that regard, let me know. - Mike Greene
