Subject: [LUG] [LAM] Is Logic on OSX that bad?
Message #133893
Hi Guys, I have a home system (g4/logic5/os9.2) and I have ordered a portable system (logic/OSX/g4powerbook). I noticed that a few guys on the list were saying that they had problems with Logic on OSX and that it wasn't really suitable for large projects which really surprised/worried me. Can anyone else comment on how they have found OSX and logic to behave as I don't want to commit to converting all my projects to an OSX environment if there are problems. Ideally - some good and bad reviews if possible! Many thanks Anthony

Too much buffering & too infrequent writing for my 1GHz Titanium internal drive at smaller buffer sizes, the same plus high CPU use for external Firewire drives. In terms of audio processing alone, I'm finding OSX has a small overall performance hit (5% or so), but more optimized plugins in Logic 6 should offset this nicely. I'm also finding Logic 5.5 on OSX to be a little _less_ stable than 5.5 on OS9 with my RME multiface. But at least when it crashes it doesn't hose the whole OS. I'm hoping Logic 6 will improve things somewhat, though I suspect the disk problems lie more with CoreAudio and OSX Firewire code. Any Logic 6 users care to comment on disk performance at low buffer sizes - 128 sample buffer, record/playback 16+ tracks? Just thought I should post my experiences with OSX considering some of the recent comments. Running OS 10.2.4 with Logic Gold 5.5 and a Delta 44 on a G4 400 Gigabit (704 MB) IBM 60 Gig 7200rpm drive for audio. I have found OSX to be steadily improving in speed with each update. However, it is definitely slower than OS9 as far as user interface goes. And this is the main point I want to make. The performance of Logic is only about 5% better in OS9 (testing with max number of voices in EXS). The EXS will have half the performance in both OS9 and X if I turn on the virtual sample manager. Also performance of EXS is halved when sample storage is set to 16 bit. So you need a lot of memory if you use big samples. Generally I would say running OSX with anything less than about 700MB may get you in trouble (depending on use). If you are getting only 16 audio tracks I would suggest there is a problem somewhere that needs to be tracked down, but it is not OSX. I have had no problems with the Delta 44 except that it doesn't save settings properly (only an issue on reboot which I rarely do these days). Also crashes have become extremely rare and this is a huge improvement on OS9. Core audio and midi are going to bring some really nice benefits, and I have noticed some excellent AU and utility development from non-commercial sources. I can run iTunes through my soundcard more easily and the column view in the finder is almost worth the switch alone. So to summarise: OSX is working very well for me. User interface slowness is the only issue for me and hopefully this will improve in Logic soon. My graphics card does not support Quartz Extreme so that is part of the problem. The only reasons I see for not going to OSX right now are the need for AU versions of VST plug-ins and some driver issues (but keep in mind how driver development for OS9 has been). Curious, I just gave 5.5 on OSX a quick try (Mac DP 867, 768 Ram, OS 9.2.2, Logic Audio Platinum 5.5.0, Sound Diver 3.0.5, Emagic AMT 8, Motu 1224) with the new MOTU PCI-324 OS X driver. Short of few minor quirks, worked fine. Screen scrolling and redraws were slower than in OS 9. I got MIDI jumble on starts after repositioning the song pointer mid song. Also, converting the audio out assignments had to be done manually- in 9, ASIO driver saw outs 1-10, in OS X, the MOTU driver saw only outs 1-8. Kind of a pain. And yes, I imported my key commands and autoload song from OS 9. Not having my VST plugs is the kicker. I can't switch until that is resolved. -Adam
