Jeroen,
Tony is absolutely right. I've had good luck keeping the ATA hard drives
on one IDE bus (usually primary) and relegating CDs, DVDs and CD-Rs to
the secondary. That's the smartest way to handle it. CD drives will only
slow down your hard drives. The whole master/slave thing is overrated
(at least as far as IDE drives is concerned).
