Subject: [LAM] Frustrated new Logic user needs help!
Message #128527
I recently purchased the Logic Platinum crossgrade - I've been using Cubase for years. Well, I'm a little embarrased to say that Logic is the most confusing program I've encountered (and I've been a full-time Mac consultant for 14 years). For starters, I can't even find the Tutorial song referred to in the Introduction Manual (it's supposed to be in the Logic folder but it's not anywhere on my hard drive!). I can't figure out how to get a Metronome click. I don't have a MIDI sound module - I'm using softsynths only. I figured out I'm supposed to use the KlopfGeist instrument to get a click but I can't get it to make a noise. Why is something as simple as a metronome click such a convoluted process? Am I missing something obvious here? I've created a number of songs using only the Logic instruments and I can't figure out how to export the songs as AIFFs to burn to CD (this was a simple menu choice in Cubase). I finally found the BOUNCE button on the audio mixer, but it says I have nothing to bounce. Do I have to convert my Instrument tracks to audio tracks before I can export my song to AIFF? Am I missing something here, too? I'm worried that Logic isn't the best choice for virtual intstrument based composition. I'm really wanting to like Logic but this is a very difficult transition. This program seems so un-Mac like. I wonder if Apple will give it a major interface overhaul - I feel like that would be good for me but bad for users that are comfortable with Logic's way of doing things. Thanks for any help! Andy

Just found out myself. Before I have always programmed a hihat or something and looped it, as a click (takes two seconds) > I've created a number of songs using only the Logic > instruments and I can't > figure out how to export the songs as AIFFs to burn to CD > (this was a simple > menu choice in Cubase). I finally found the BOUNCE button on > the audio > mixer, but it says I have nothing to bounce. After clicking the Bounce button you are presentet a parameter box for the bouncing process. Here you have to specify the start and end position. It's just as you are doing an "Export Audio Mixdown" in Cubase and have to sett the left and right locator for it to work. > I'm really wanting to like Logic but this is a very difficult > transition. This > program seems so un-Mac like. I wonder if Apple will give it > a major interface > overhaul - I came to Logic from Cubase/Atari and learned Mac at the same time I was learning Logic. Then I moved Logic to a PC, where it still spins, but I think the program is not more difficult than Cubase and SX. On the other hand I would say that you can do more, musically, with Logic. Well, at least faster ;-) > I feel like that would be good for me but bad for > users that are > comfortable with Logic's way of doing things. Keep posting your questions to this awesome list ;-) Many of us do really think that Logic is the best. You'll get it. Best wishes Per Boysen ________________ www.boysen.se www.looproom.com

Hi there, Andy Abernathy <andrewa@...> wrote: > For starters, I can't even find the Tutorial song referred to in the > Introduction Manual (it's supposed to be in the Logic folder but it's not > anywhere on my hard drive!). It should be on the CD. > I can't figure out how to get a Metronome click. Seeing as you don't have an external instrument you have two options (afaik). [ First check out Metronome in the Manual index ] Speaker Click - which is in the Settings. And I guess setting up a softsynth (Ch10) to receive output from the metronome in the Environment. > I figured out I'm supposed to use the KlopfGeist instrument to get a click but I can't get it to make a noise. I don't have version 5 - but my guess is that you need to set the *output* source of the klopfGeist. i.e., it's probably working but you haven't set it to send to something. e.g., connect it to an instrument. > Why is something as simple as a metronome click such a convoluted process? Then it should become much clearer. http://www.omega-art.com/logic/faq/ Understanding Logic's environment (at least basically) will fast-track you understanding in this area. It seems convoluted because it has much more to offer - and consequently takes a little bit of effort to understand for the newbie. > I'm really wanting to like Logic but this is a very difficult transition. This > program seems so un-Mac like. No. It is not un-Mac like... it is simply an advanced tool. As said above, once you understand the basics of midi flow in Logic you'll find things much better... with regards, -- Lachlan Deck ldeck@...

Logic Audio is...like going from a VW Beetle to the space shuttle. If you don't read the manual before getting in,you won't even get the engine running. It took me 6 months of playing around on a friend's logic to get that.I recommend reading the manual, and even getting a book about logic.Even the big book stores carry that stuff now.I just ordered my very own Gold version this week, and look forward to many years of musicmaking with it.
