I have a Powerbook G3 400 Pismo with Motu 828. I want to buy a version of
logic which
should help me with the following:
- record my band with 8 channels audio simultaneously with the 828
- use softsynths such as EVP73 and AU-based instruments such as Simplesynth
- mix all of it to CD
- printing scores of my arrangements and melodies
- adding music to digital video projects
- play EVP73 or similar
instruments live with Midiman Oxygen 8
Now I am considering the Logic Big Box, which seems to be very good value
and includes lots of extra snacks such as the sampler.
I have trouble finding out if there is anything important I am missing by
going for Logic Audio instead of Gold or Platinum. Can Logic Audio do the
things I mention above? Is there an easy upgrade path to Platinum if I
should find out L Audio is not enough.

You would need Logic Gold at least to format and print scores
properly. (Unless Logic Audio has added more score features than the
old Logic Silver)

Don't know about LA 5.x but Logic Silver 4.x was definately not able to
record other inputs than input1+2 on my audio card which offers 4 in and
4 out. One of the reasons I upgraded to Gold. Scoring is also pretty
basic.

Thanks for the input.
Does anybody know if this has changed in Logic Audio for
MacOSX, i.e. can the latest version of Logic Audio (not gold, not
platinum)record 8
tracks of audio simultaneously?
Also, is there any web-source with detailed info on
the latest versions of Logic (it seems Emagic has removed the comparison
chart for
different versions of Logic).
Thanks

Hi,
It's all listed at Emagic's website - up to 12 simultaneous inputs
and outputs supported (depending of course on hardware). By the way,
I'm one of the few people here using Logic Audio (as opposed to Gold
or Plat), and I can tell you the features are vastly improved in
version 5. Updating felt more like an upgrade - especially with
regards to automation, effects routing, and sound quality.

That is great info, thanks a lot. Can I ask also whether the EVP73 and
EXSP24 in the Big Box is working in OSX?
Cheers

Hi,
All Emagic instruments are supposed to work in OSX according to
Emagic. I'm still using 9.1, so I can't compare the performance, but
you can search this forum - I think this has been covered.

Notice that EXSP24 and EVP73are Logic's VST istruments and not
Logic's "intrernal" instruments.
As far as I know, neither of these two works in OS X. You might
(should ?) be able to update them to full ESX24
and EVP88 which do work in OS X. Contact your dealer or maybe wait a
few weeks and see if Winiter NAMM will bring news.
Cheers

I think that's only the case for virtual instruments that are actually
part of Logic itself, like EXS24 and EVP88. The ones mentioned above ---
EXSP24 and EVP73 --- are proper VST 2.0 instruments that will work with
any host, and as far as I can tell have not been ported to OSX yet.

They do not work in Logic under OSX. The EVP73 and EXSP24 in the Big
Box are VST's. I called emagic to ask whether they would be ported
and they said " i dont know, maybe". so thats helpful.

Hm, that is a draw-back. Perhaps I'll try to buy only Logic Audio,
i.e. without the box, but I guess it is not much cheaper than the box...

when i bought it the Big Box was 50$ cheaper than the standard Logic.
PLus you do get the ES1 built in synth which i user in OSX.
realistcally i cant believe that a company thats pushing Audio Units
so hard WONT convert their softsynths to Audio Units too . . . i got
the feeling they were just be non-commital as thats a very corporate
way to behave.
incidentally, on a measly 800mhz G3 800 ibook ive been finding the
ES1 to run REALLY well on OSX. . .the graphics updates are a tad
slower but patch loading and instrument responsiveness are actually
improved over OS9, which i found surprising as i lack the Altivec
instructions.
now if they could just add in Rewire support and port my VSTs over id
be set!
