I have been experimenting using Logic to sweeten mixes on some short films I
have been the editor on. I am exporting the OMFs from Final Cut Pro. Low
budget projects for sure but it is just my attempt to add value [($$?) to my
edit skills and add polish to something that would not get much sweetening
otherwise.
My Process is:
Bring Firewire drive to Logic System
Open FCP project, Export Audio OMF(48kHz, 16 bit, same as digitized)
Render QuickTime of locked Picture Track with pre-mix as audio track.
Open Logic5.3 import OMF and Open "Movie as Float" Everything
seems to line
up nicely without any fuss. I locked SMPTE on all regions to avoid
accidentally moving stuff out of sync.
I have the Hammerfall TotalMix set up for a stereo mix to 1&2.
Problems:
1) I am getting snaps and crackles even on a light six track sequence. All
AIFF audio, no MIDI. I have a 20 channel mix coming up, Yikes!! This
wouldn't be processor dependant would it, I have 2x1GHz and 1.5 Gigs of RAM.
2) I started to get an error message after pressing play that said something
like Error-43, I would hit OK, another message about "Fade file not
available, file-43" (paraphrasing) Hit OK again and it would play fine,
albeit problem #1(above) was there throughout. This eventually happened
every time I pressed play. I quit and rebooted but it didn't go away.
3) Possibly a stupid question but if I have some problematic location sound
that needs tweaking what's the best way to do that? Can EQ/Noise reduction
be added to a region and processed inna AVID/FCP stylee or is it strictly
track based?
Oh yeah, the inability to lock/link two-track-mono tracks together and add
automation to them both with one mouse stroke is a big impediment to
productivity. Or am I missing something here...?
thanks for your time.

IMO this shouldn't happen with such a small mix... Did you try to
increase the buffer size (in Audio Hardware)?

? No idea... Isn't Logic supposed to recreate the fadefiles automatically?

I don't know what AVIDE/FCP style is :-), but in principle processing
is track based, yes. You could however route part of your mix to a
bus and do the processing there. Would that suffice?

If the two tracks are part of a stereo file (i.e. xxx.L and xxx.R
files), then Logic can indeed treat them as one. I've never done it
myself, so I might be somewhat off here, but I think you can either
switch off Universal Track mode, or have Logic create an interleaved
file from the 2 mono files. It's somewhere in the chapter on the
Audio Window in the manual -- quite a clear explanation. I just read
it this week, but have already forgotten the details :-).

I tried playing around with OMF Import/Export a few months ago, and I
seem to remember that fade files were an issue. Whenever I have Fade
File errors (most often when playing audio files from CD - "Fade file
cannot be written") the answer is in 'reminding' Logic where I want it
to write these files, i.e. "Set Audio Record Path" in the
"Audio File"
menu in the Audio window. Since OMF also exports and imports a version
of its own fade files, your clicks and pops may be a result of skipping
improperly from the main audio file to the fade file. In the same menu
you can "Delete Fade Files" which will cause Logic to rewrite the
Fade
file the next time you hit Play. This may help, I don't know.

Dont' overlook the possibility of cutting a section of one track that
needs special help and copying it in place to an unused track to apply
a particular EQ to that section alone. With your honking great
computer, you should be able to run lotsa tracks that weren't in the
original OMF file! (I'm jealous;)

You can re-encode linked mono AIFF tracks into stereo AIFF's from (once
again) the same menu as above, "Convert to AIFF Stereo" but you'll
find
your linked mono tracks still hang around until you delete them and
import the stereo track back into the song. Careful to write down or
otherwise record the start frame position, otherwise you'll lose your
sync! Alternatively, what might work would be to create a new unused
stereo track and drag your linked mono files "in place" to it. In
the
past I've seen Logic recognize linked mono as stereo when this is done.
If your mono tracks are not linked, you need some external software to
link them, but I can't think what that might be. Anyone?
Best of luck,
Sonny Keyes
