Here is what i'm trying to do:
Use a midi controller slider to create/edit automation data for Midi CC#40
on a
midi track.
I want it to be automation data, but i dont want to have to write it in with
my
mouse.
using the track automation splitter, i'm able to do this for my virus kb -
but only
for volume and pan type things - not other cc's.
is this possible? if so, how do i go about doing this?

There seems to be a problem with recording controllers (except for
cc1 and cc7). You can record the data as fader events though, and if
needed convert those back to cc's upon playback if needed.
If you're not sure how to go about recording incoming CC as fader
events, you might want to download my tutorial on automation
recording: it's called Autodemo and is available from the Soft
section of my website (see signature).

No. It's a bug, introduced from version 5.2. It's not even possible
to write midi CC controllers other than volume and pan to track
automation from the _onscreen_ controls (you could in 5.0x and
5.1x).
Use the old-style "midi" region-based automation instead
(switch track auto to "midi", engage record mode). Then you can
convert the midi regions to track automation if desired.
