hey all,
I just switched to Mac, and installed Logic Gold 5.3 on my iBook this
afternoon. Nothing ever goes according to plan it seems, and I am
having a few problems I hope my learned Logic brethren can assist
with.
1. .LSO files created on a PC aren't recognised by MacOS, even
though they have the same file extension. Does this mean I have to
re-create ALL my existing song projects, importing each piece of
audio one-by-one?
2. Names of audio files transferred from a PC are only showing 8
characters of their title. for example, a file called
mygreatsong.wav on my PC shows up as mygrea~1.aiff. this is making
it very hard to find which audio files are which as I import and
rebuild my songs from scratch.
3. Most un-nervingly, when I open a plugin that has a graphical
window (like GoldVerb, Compressor, Tremelo, etc) I get a MacAV error,
and it shows the plugin in 'slider' form, like AVerb and
SilverCompressor. Is this just because I'm using MacAV, or is it a
localised problem.
Audio plays back fine, and latency between volume changes, panning,
etc and hearin ght corresponding change is next-to-minimal. I will
be getting an Mbox for this setup on Monday, but I don't think it
will fix the above problems.
I know I'm asking alot, and I WILL be calling me Emagic distributors
on Monday and hassling them for answers too. Any help that any of
you can give is greatly appreciated.
Reply directly to heathskerman@... if possible. thanks.

No. You need to understand that Macs organise files differently to PC.s PC
files are recognised by their file extension (.WAV, .TXT etc). Mac files
have an extra bit inside the file that determines what type of file it is.
If you move PC files directly onto a Mac, they don't contain this
information. You need to change the filetypes of your lso files - someone
here will be able to tell you exactly what to do, I'm not really a Mac
person.
(I have a feeling you can do an "import" and Logic *will* see
non-Logic
filetypes - worth a try).

This is a PC thing. How did you transfer your files - via CD?

Hmm, is this a quicktime thing? I've heard stuff like this before which was
solved by enabling/installing quicktime...

I think if you use "import" and navigate to the correct directory
they
should work
"add audio file" on the audio page has no problem recognizing .wav
Firstly, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has offered excellent
advice.
The IMPORT function has helped, but all the files I have transferred
from my PC are .wav files, and while Quicktime recognises them as QT
files and will play them, the aren't recognised as the files Logic is
looking for when I import a song. Will I need to convert all my
audio files to .aiff on my PC, then transfer the project folder to my
mac? Are there any file-convertor programs that you recommend?
I'm still worried about my plugin interfaces. EXS24 is really hard
to use in 'slider' form!
Thanks again, and keep those fixes coming!!

If what you are using is an iBook, it would probably be better for you
to keep using your PC... Anyway, don't panic - your problems may be
solved

I presume you are using Mac Os 9. If you choose Import in Logic, instead
of open, and locate your file from inside the dialog box, you sould be
able to open it correctly. While they are Logic files, they aren't
exactly the same files. Another solution you can try is going to Control
Panels (Apple Menu > Control Panels) and open File Exchange, which is a
utility that's there exactly to ensure compatibility between PC files
and the Mac apps able to open them (not only, but also). Once in there,
you will see a TAB called PC exchange, and a button called ADD. Click on
it. You will see a box telling "search for applications". After
the box
changes to other, you will see a dialog box with several items. On top,
there is the extension - type LSO. Behind, you will see a list of
Application. If Logic appears there - fine, If not, click on the button
labeled Select, and locate the application. In the file type, leave what
is selected (should be EM3F). Then click ADD, and that's it. Next time,
these files should even be displayed with the appropriate icon.
Or, you can download a script made by someone on this list (I think it
was Henrik Van Neestra), and change the file headers for Logic to
recognize these files automatically.

If you recorded these files using a CD, you probably recorded it using
Joliet format. Therefore, you must install an extension named Joliet
Volume Access (look for it on the Internet). Version 1.4 is free, while
version 2 is a paid shareware. This in a much needed extension, since
Mac Os 9 cannot recognize long file names on a Joliet format CD (the joy
of working on a "user friendly" OS). If you have it installed, you
will
notice that you CD file nemaes will display correctly now. Anybody
migrating from Windows absolutley should get and install this Extension
while working on OS 9

Seems like your installation misses the Res folder. Check inside your
Logic folder if there is a Res folder. If there is one, check of the
files there have the creatyion date of Thursday 22 August 2002. These
are the correct ones for Logic 5.3
If in doubt, try a new installation USING the install CD from Emagic.

There's a VERY useful app for Mac called FileTyper.
Here: http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~dazuma/filetyper/
It allows you to re-configure the File Type
and/or Creator of any Mac file.
So, you could drag an entire folder of 100 .LSO files on it, choose
<same as> any "real" Mac Logic song and all your
"unreadable" files
will be converted in one shot.
Regards - Colin
What OS are you running and are you networked to your PC? This makes
life much easier than the CD thing for doing the file translation,
especially if you can boot into OS10.
