With all these Logic plug ins, and due to the fact that there is a DS2416 in
my setup, I thought my AW8's eight outputs wouldn't be useful anymore ; but
even if you don't intend to use external effects, there is still an exciting
thing to do with separate outputs. My music involves lots of guitars (2-3,
plus bass) but I often compose the songs alone, so I did following
connections with the AW8 :
out 3 -> Fender amp (for clean/crunch guitars)
out 4 -> Marshall amp (for more distorted guitars)
out 5 -> bass amp
All amps are positionned in the room as they are usually when the band
plays. The drums come out from an SB Live (Sonic Implants soundfonts) and
the vocals from the DS2416. Both are of course connected to the mixing
desk/stereo monitors.
Waow. With eyes closed, the band IS in the room ! Its' so different from the
"classical", rather sterilized way of monitoring through some
NS10M pair. In
particular, I found this setup great for composing vocals over instrumental
parts. You feel real guitar amps vibrating next to you, exactly as they
would do in a real gig. And you can record the whole thing with two mikes,
if you want to keep this "live" sound. Of course it can be done
with any
other sequencer than Logic... but I thought it could interest some of you.

PS : if you try it, don't forget to lower the separate outs' levels (much
higher than a guitar amp likes to be fed with !) and of course record the
guitars/bass "dry", before the amps...
