Subject: [LAM] Mac Performance
Message #117556
Hello list. I'm goning to buy Mac. http://www.emagic.de/english/news/2002/switch.html Have a question. How much fast dual G4 1Ghz compared to 873?? I'm between the decision. Don't know it's really worth to pay a $1000 more to 1G rather than having 873. I want to hear some opinion from logic users. I am also curious how much Mac really compete with Win machine. My Win Machine currently using daily base is Pen4 2.0. Tomonori Matsumura

The "new" 1 GHz DP has an ATA 100 buds for hd's which means that the hd is quite much faster using small file (I measured up to 90 MB/S with ATTO tools). > I am also curious how much Mac really compete with Win machine. Longer answer: don't take the PV test for comparisms, because it make the Mac looking much worse than it is. I can get as much Vintage Warmers (14) and ES2 voices (276) out of the 1 GHz DP as users of quite fast P4 and Athlon users (well, high end PCs will give more). But in addition to that I can still open 3 Lexicon quality reverbs on the first cpu (Altiverb) or run complex Rewire stuff (Live!, Reason). Also if you use many Live inputs: Macs seem top use less cpu on Live inputs (6% for 24 I/Os here). And Live Inputs run on the first cpu, meaning that they won't take away any processiong power from the second cpu that does the most of the audio processing. Conclusion: If you use many Live Inputs or Rewire Stuff or want to use Altiverb the 1 GHz DP would give a similar or better performance than a P4 2 GHz. Maybe then also the 867 DP would be good enough for you. If you don't use all the above the 1 GHz DP is the way to go. Hope this helps Ray
