Ok, here's the deal. Back in May I built a new PC for myself (I let my old
G4 go...who knew??). Anyway, I did a fresh install of Win XP Pro and Logic
5.0 and experienced nothing but problems. Drop down menus in certain audio
programs (Rebirth in particular) would cause a fuzzy kind of static through
my soundcard (MOTU 2408 Mk I - yes, I had current XP drivers btw) and
playback was nearly impossible at any buffer setting. Logic didn't fare much
better, I got tons of ASIO Overload errors. I went through all the possible
tweaks, disabling nearly everything to make it run better. No luck. I
switched back to Win 98 SE and went from there. Although it runs mediocre,
it's just extra buggy 90% of the time. I may get 15 tracks of audio with
maybe just as many plug-ins and I still get those rotten ASIO errors. The
System Performance bar graph under "Audio" runs at about 1/3. Come
on, my
old G4 single 450 would handle this just fine! Also, I cannot set my 2408
buffer under 1024 or else I get even more ASIO errors (makes for super
tricky EXS 24 timing). On my old Mac, I could run it right down to 64 with
no problems. I want to run XP but am afraid to try this install again for
fear I'll be unable to work in the foreseeable future.
Here's my setup:
Asus P4T-E Mboard
Intel Pentium IV 2.1ghz
512 mb Rambus RAM
Logic Platinum 5.1.3
Hard Drives are 7200 rpm IBM Deskstars (never het disk overload errors,
though)
MOTU 2408 Mk I (XP drivers were current at the time and there appears to
have been no update since)
It just doesn't seem right that I am unable to run more than 15 or so audio
tracks at a time on this machine. Forget about using more than one VSTi -
that's totally out of the question. I know some people find XP to be totally
stable and some are running the exact same hardware configuration as myself.
Has there been a service release for XP that addresses these issues? Does
anyone have any advice outside of going back to a Mac? Frustrated...
Thanks.

When you say you did a fresh install did you write
zero's back on your hard drive before installing XP?

Does the system share interrupts between sound card, graphics card etc.?
I recently disabled ACPI on my ASUS A7V133 to make sure that my sound
card (M-audio) has a free IRQ. This does have a huge impact. Don't know
about faster/newer motherboards. I got into trouble after upgrading from
Logic 4.8 to 5.1... Now I have occasional static noises but ASIO errors
are gone. Logic 4.8 used to be fast and responsive on XP Home.
Should you decide to disable ACPI, read more about it to fully
understand what this is about. Look in the LUG archives for relevant
messages on this topic.

Something is definately wrong that much I can tell you. I have the same
setup as you except for my Hammerfall and a 1.8 P4. I can run at least 64
tracks (I didn´t test more than that because that was Logics max at
the
time) and more than 50 platinum reverbs without asio overloads. Of course I
don´t do that I just tested the performance when I first got my PC.
All I
can advice you is to do yet another clean install of everything and if
that´s not
enough I would check the soundcard since that´s our only difference in
setups and then there´s always the possibility of some part not
working
properly.

No

Yes: This machine should fly on XP and handle Logic with ease. Why don't u
"advanced" install XP on a different freshly formatted partition?
Disable ACPI
(as documented in any Win XP audio tweaks page with the F5 Key - switch to
Standard PC) on install or better still disable ACPI in your BIOS. Once u
have
done this the only necessary tweak within XP is to set the machine to
prioritise
"background services" (again well documented). If this still fails
I would
suggest there is a fault somewhere.
Download SiSoft Sandra and run the benchmark tests. This might guide you as
to
where your performance is disappearing.

All this is really only a few hours work and it will reap massive dividends
to
have things correct from the start.

Aeon,
I would like to suggest you also check to see if you have any other
applications on your machine which run at a slower speed than
expected. This my point you toward a fault.
I have a lesser set up to you with win2000 and it is very solid.
Is it possible for you to remove anyt other PCI cards from you
machine other than the the MOTU interface, then test. XP sets up IQR
settings automaticly but some bios setups prefer to have IQR's
asigned within the bios. When I set up my system initally I had bad
performance but I managed to get a computer nut to help me with the
bios set up and after that the system has been very solid.
