Subject: [CROSS] Is OS X 10.2x ready for audio?
Message #117393
As a PC user about to cross to a mac: are there still major problems with audio on OS X? See the threads at MacRumors http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid638 and at apple.com, support, discussions, Mac OS X, audio Sounds a bit scary to me. This forum has been pretty silent on these issues, no problems with Logic/OS X? kp

I have no trouble with my Delta 66 PCI card using MacOS X, FireWire should be okay too. In one of those threads I have even read that a USB card with three seperate (not bandwith sharing) USB ports has fixed the problem too. Sadly I can't remember where I read it and what the name of that card was. Cheers.

Maybe I am missing something here, but I never thought of USB as an appropriate solution for real-time audio I/O. It is a shared bus and max's out at something like 1.5 mbs. I personally have had no problems whatsoever with my MOTU 828 firewire interface. The forum listed about seems to have lots of people claiming to be "pro audio" users who are using USB interfaces. Maybe the title of this thread should read "Is USB ready for real-time audio?"

The latest USB (version 2.0, hich was officially released about 2 years back) has it running at 480Mbs. The USB mode ('low speed mode' 1.5Mbs) that you are referring to here is for keyboards, mice, and such. The USB mode that has mainly been used for audio in the past has been 12Mbs or what they call the 'full speed mode'. Danny

In the meantime why not use FireWire or PCI cards? Cheers.

Hi there, On Monday, September 2, 2002, at 06:40 PM, kporkka wrote: > As a PC user about to cross to a mac: > are there still major problems with audio on OS X? > > See the threads at MacRumors > http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid638 I think the post from "lewnworx" on the 2nd page is the most worthy of reading. It's long but the guy's done his homework, is actually using Logic and shares his experience. From what I can gather:- The people complaining comprise the following types: - Those who just love to gripe but have no experience (like 'I'm a professional Audio dude running an old iMac...'). - Those who make bogus claims. - Some legit concerns. - The reference to support discussions is apparently mainly talking about USB speakers like iSub. > and at apple.com, support, discussions, Mac OS X, audio > > Sounds a bit scary to me. This forum has been pretty silent on these > issues, no problems with Logic/OS X? There's a good reason for that. Logic for X only came out yesterday! There have been no serious audio apps available for OS X until recently which makes it kind of funny that there's so many "professional" concerns raised above... > kp with regards, -- Lachlan Deck ldeck@...
