If Apple does move to an x86-compatible platform, the hardware required WILL STILL BE APPLE HARDWARE! They'll simply be using a different CPU & supporting chipset. It's extremely unlikely you'd ever be able to use an off-the-shelf Dell, or build an x86-clone from generic parts and run OSX on it. Even if that's what Apple are using for these rumoured versions, you can bet they'll add enough proprietary Apple hardware dependencies to make sure only _their_ x86 box will run OSX, if/when it's available. You're exactly correct. The possibility of the MacOS booting up on a standard Windows machine (assuming both use the same Intel or AMD processor) is as likely as the MacOS booting up on some device now that also uses the PPC processor that current Macs use. Besides, part of the reason that the Mac platform is superior *is* the fact that there are very few hardware combinations (vastly less possibility for conflicts). On a purely statistical level, you've got a great chance of getting a bum PC that doesn't work with certain software or hardware. f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!" I use a Mac because I'm in the business of computing my work, not working my computer.

Part of the reason that the PC platform is superior *is* the fact that pcs can be custom-built to serve certain applications. Most branded pcs are aimed at home/office applictaions and therefore may work as a killer DAW, but more than likely will have a bottleneck somewhere. But you knew that right? ;-) Adam P

We really did not mean to spark yet another pointless, endless, and all around silly round of Mac vs PC debates, which will not be tolerated. Some of the most helpful and most prolific posters on the LUG are set to "un-moderated" to help ease the burden on all of us moderators. When someone is set to "un-moderated" their posts immediately go out to all of the LUG without giving us a chance to edit them if necessary. However we have specifically told them **multiple times** not to say controversial things like this, and assumed that they would listen. This plan usually just fine as we have tried our best to make only a very few people on the LUG un-moderated who are extremely helpful to other every single day.. but now and then this strategy backfires on us, as it did here. Since F-erenc has ignored our wishes I am making him "moderated" again immediately. Please accept my sincerest apologies! Our "zero-tolerance" "no Mac VS PC debates" rule *is* still very much in effect. Thanks for your understanding, Jeremy _____________________________ Jeremy Martin; sadus@...
