OK. I just installed LAP 5.3 on OSX 10.2.
My Delta 1010 shows up splendidly, and works spot on. BTW, If you've got
one of these, check out the nifty monitor panel. Although you can use Audio
& Midi to set it up, there's also an OSX version of the Delta control
panel
which has this new meter button that brings up a floaty palette that shows
all the in and out levels. Cool.
Sadly..
My AMT8 does not show up at all. In the midi tab of Audio & Midi I see
nothing. Rescanning shows nothing.
From the website I'd gathered that it was a simultaneous release, and the
download notes would lead one to believe that the Unitor/AMT8 stuff got
installed as part of the LAP 5.3/OSX installation.
It doesn't, at least from what I can tell. Any clues?
On a positive note it did a really good job of translating my 9.x autoload
over to the CoreAudio ins and outs. When I opened my Autoload it just asked
me if I wanted to convert, I hit convert and had audio 5 seconds later. Now
If I could just get my midi going. I'm missing my control surface stuff
already. God, you have no idea how much of a drag the mouse is until you're
forced to go back and use it again.

I found I had to configure Audio and MIDI myself. The 5.3 installer didn't
do it for me. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what I did, but I did
reboot the machine,
and I also had to reboot the AMT8, then I set up a new configuration and the
AMT was there. [it is recognised as Unitor] I thought it may have been
because I'm using a
third-party USB/firewire card in a beige G3, but maybe everyone needs to do
this.

hallo Dave,
How is macos X on a beige G3? I also installed an usb card on my beige G3
(for the Xskey) , but I thought that MACOS X is not running smoothly on this
kind of computer. What's your opinion about it? cause I see that you have
installed macos X!!!And Logic together with macos X and the beige G3? what
about the performance?

These parameters aren't required any more. To check if a MIDI out
port is available, open the MIDI port popup menu of a MIDI instrument.

It does. See above.

Logic Control is fully supported on Mac OS X.

Bear in mind the G3/233 is not my main computer. My G4 is out on loan
at the moment, so this is all I have to test Jaguar and 5.3 on. [in
fact I stripped OSX from my G4 when I got a ProTools mix system last
year, because of potential PACE authorization problems, so I have been
running OSX on the beige box for most of the time since it's release]
At first OS 10.0 was pretty slow and arduous, but by the time it got to
10.1.3 or something, it was running pretty smoothly for the low
demands I was putting on it.
I was concerned that Jaguar may be the end of the road and the OS would
finally tell me the generic firewire/usb card I am using was not up to
the game, but, in fact, it seems as fast as OS9.2. Logic seems to be
running fine too. I haven't tested the cpu limits, but I can at least
run a single audioinstrument. [I maxed out at about 2 ES1s in OS9,
depending on polyphony] I have been checking out EVB3, and it runs
fine at about 2 voices polyphony, but audio crackles then ceases at 3
voices.
I have the XSKey and AMT8 on a MacAlly powered hub connected to the
firewire/usb card [no brand name on the box] Both are working fine. I
have an internal fast SCSI drive on an ADAPTEC 2930 powerdomain
controller, and an external firewire drive. Both seem to be playing
back audio OK.
The audio is handled by a Delta Audiophile card. I was initially
concerned when installing the 10.2 Delta drivers, because the info
stated a G4 as being minimum system requirement. But it installed fine,
and is probably handling audio better than it does on OS9 [where I have
had issues of the card distorting every so often, for which I have to
open the delta control panel from the ASIO driver to get relief. But
this has not happened on OX, so-far.]
I haven't tested the number of tracks I can run. I'll do that if I get
time.
All in all, running Logic on this machine is similar to running 5.2 in
OS9. Some things seem to run faster, some slower, but they average
out about the same.
The experience has been much smoother than i felt I had a right to
expect, given the CPU and third-party usb/firewire card and SCSI card.
hope this helps

Well (althought I'm not Dave) I can speak from experience...
I've been using Mac OS X since 10.0 was released and it quickly became
my primary OS not only because I wanted to learn as much as I could
about it and because it is amazing to look at but because IMHO it runs
really well - even on this beige G3 233 of mine (Of course 10.1 was a
real boost for everyone's X experience). So if anyone has bones to pick
about OS X's performance on a Beige G3, I do as the G3 233 is at the
bottom of the requirements to run OS X.
I'm currently running 10.1.5 which is the best so far. My only restarts
are for OS 9. I can't remember (seriously) the last time I've had any
problems it's so stable. An app may give me trouble, but the OS keeps
charging on.... I'm looking forward to 10.2 which should run even
better...
You'll find with experience in OS X that the way you do things will not
necessarily be as you did them in OS 9. This is not to feared. What I'm
getting at is that when you start with OS X have an open mind as to new
ways of working so that you can figure out the most efficient practices.
For example, in OS 9 you might have a series of tabbed windows at the
bottom of the screen listing your aliases (Apple, Controls, Office,
Studio, etc) and basically your desktop is kind of central - Hard
Drives, removable media on the desktop etc. I've found instead that in
OS X having two Finder windows tiled to a decent width and height I can
move and find things much more quickly. I love the column view (from
NeXT). The Dock is also very handy. I've got mine on the right so I've
got the rest of the screen for everything else. 1152x870 screen res -
the max I can get out of this AppleVision - on OS 9 may have been too
small, but on OS X it just gives me much more screen real estate. I can
run more apps etc etc...the multitasking is just a treat...
So - when people say, "Mac OS X doesn't run properly on a Beige
G3"...
It's absolute Bogus!!
with regards,
