Hi,
it has been consistently stated for the past 9+ months that serial MIDI (not
necessarily other types of devices) will not be supported on OSX. I am a PC
user and this has been clear to me.

My specualtion as to the reason why is that this is a new protocol (or
whatever the correct term is) and Apple wants to keep it streamlined and
efficient rather than bogging it down with extra code for legacy stuff
which is just going to become less and less used as time passes. The
decision will probably be negative to a small few in orfder to benefit the
majority. I personally use the serial part of my Unitor, but I can
understand Apple's thinking and will happily witch to USB when OSX is
usable for Logic since core midi will obviously be optimized for
USB.Hopefully some of the legacy users will start to realize that they are
just looking at the future. It always sucks when you have to shell out some
extra doe for some new gear, but I'm sure USB will last for a long enough
time to justify the cost for those people. Just my 2 cents :-)

Yep, I fully agree with that and do understand/appreciate this.
Again, my thinking is that from a user point of view (don't know if this
makes good business sense) it is non-sensical to replace a perfectly
good piece of equipment due to the fact that its only deficiency happens
to be the lack of a USB port for example, as in this case. Tomorrow it
will be the same for USB port interfaces. The Mk I and MII afaik are
virtually identical otherwise.
Anyway - it'd be great if Emagic came out with a "Unitor". i.e., a
stripped down Unitor8/AMT8 that simply allowed older Unitor8's to
connect to the "Unitor" which then connected to the computer. This
"Unitor" could then be replaced whenever a new protocol was
required...meaning that when USB's game is up the current crop of
Unitor's could remain just as useful.
This means much cheaper upgrades from a User point of view. Again - not
sure if that's great from a business point of view...

Sorry but i am less forgiving and getting sick and tired of this crap.
Just got stuck about 1 year ago with an opcode 64x interface when the
company was bought out by peayvey (who needs midi when you sell
guitars) >> no support anymore, no drivers for win2k/winxp.
So i though wise and choose for a solid brand/interface >> Unitor8
(serial version). Then emagic gets sold out to apple (who needs a
serial interface when you sell USB machines). So even if i am
switching to a mac. I now have to buy a new computer (which i already
have) a new midi interface (which i already have) and who knows whats
next that is not compatible anymore with the mac.
This REALLY SUCKS !!!. I like macs but i hate spending money for
nothing.
Anyway , thanks for letting me spill my guts ;-)

When I buy a piece of gear, I try to take these kinda things into account.
For example when I bought a MOTU midi interface a little over a year ago,
having USB was a big requirement, even though my computer at the time
didn't have USB. But my thought was that serial would only be around for so
long before being replced by USB and having the USB on an interface would
ensured a longer lifespan. I am sure though that someone will make some
kind of USB to serial adaptor or something like that. Also, keep in mind
that you wont have to replace your stuff for some time. YOu have a good
year at least before anything starts getting outdated.

It was Gibson... but your point is nevertheless made.

Like I said - nonsensical... ;-)
