I agree 100% on the monitor topic. I use a Sony GDM400PS (19") and despite the somewhat steep pricetag ($719 when I bought it, now they're around $689) I am completely in love with it. The imaging is crisp and sharp, and it's great for graphics work as well - and right now I only have a 2MB video card (an old STB Powergraph64). It's not overly bright (many people falsly believe that brightness=goodness, but try sitting in front of an overly bright monitor for any good length of time and you'll know what I'm talking about) and it have many many image controls, more than I've ever bothered to futz with. I also plan on getting a second monitor, probably a ViewSonic G773 17" (due in part to their $50 rebate that's going on right now, and also that Sony isn't very price-competitive with their 17" screens). All I'm waiting for is my new Matrox G400Max video card (built-in dual monitor support). > -----Original Message----- > If you can afford it, I'd recommend a 19" > monitor.....after all, it's what you'll be staring at for hours on end. FWIW, I got my ViewSonic G790 a year ago for ~$450US. Pretty good deal I believe. > All I'm waiting for is > my new Matrox G400Max video card (built-in dual monitor support). Dual monitor support? I'm going to have to check that out. How much is that card going for? I'm assuming it's AGP? You might find this link of interest, if you haven't read it already, though I think the card is bit too expensive for multimonitor support..... http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/articles/3437A0EB76DED2E6862567C40 075DD86 Larry

I had a lot of trouble with that one (weird patterns on the screen, flickering) - I went through five of them (and God bless PCZone, who accepted every single one of them and actually paid the shipping every time) before I gave up and bought the Sony. Overall I think the Sony has a better picture (all things being equal, not considering the G790 weirdness, that is) but I guess I can't say that it's $269 better than the ViewSonic! My lady has a G773 and has never had a bit of trouble with it (and I plan on buying one shortly as my second monitor), so I'm guessing that maybe I just was picking from a bad lot of G790s. Oh well.. The G400Max is an AGP card, and it rocks all the others hands-down. Granted, it's performance is geared towards gamers (where it apparently blows the Voodoo cards away), but 32MB of RAM and a 360mHz RAMDAC can only mean that less intensive screen work will be a breeze! Plus the dual VGA outs is a major plus for me. www.matrox.com for more info; the card is due out 9/9 (US; I have no idea about Europe). > -----Original Message----- > > FWIW, I got my ViewSonic G790 a year ago for ~$450US.
