I am stunned - this sucks - I have a story to tell, then I saw this
post whilst looking through.
I recently switched from mac to pc for several reasons, cheaper
hardware, not having to spend 300 quid on an 18 month out of date
built in 8x cd-writer which I can't leave off the machine
Not being able to buy half the software that I'd like
such as acid/soundforge - great apps if you'd get off you high horses
and try them, and most of all - I started working in web design where
a colleague of mine is a logic/pc user, I used to think like the guy
above - till I saw my colleague's hand built pc running windows XP
wiping the floor with my MOTU equipped mac on plugins and system
performance.
I decided that I did'nt want to spend 5k to buy in mac what I could
get for 2k on a pc, and I was THE diehard macist, till I
realised that actually I am a musician and the only thing that
concerns me is the creation of music, to which end I'd rather spend
the money on plugins or rackmounts or mics etc.
I don't give a rats what badge the computer wears - music is about
self expression, if the guy who wrote that above only has sneering
contempt to sell, then I don't expect he'll be selling many albums,
regardless of what machine he's using.
Responses like that remind me that 2 months ago I would have
made the same arrogant, laughable reply, and I'm glad that I chose
not to be that type of individual.
More importantly - and another reason I moved - I have had endless
trouble with macs, incompatibilities, crashing, and I run a clean
system believe me, my last mac was dead on arrival and I had to deal
with the awfull mac technical support to sort it, let's hope that
emagic's up to now good technical support dosen't suffer from being
annexed by apple too!
Let's hope mac supports all current industry standards like VST and
ASIO, rather than taking you all down the very expensive apple
proprietary route.
The point is that you no longer have a choice - with apple/emagic
combined, apple can dictate to you what the future of the music
hardware business is, they've ditched floppies, they've ditched crt
monitors, what might they ditch from pro-audio to suit themselves
My point is that a monopoly is never a good thing in my opinion, and
at the end of the day all these companies are only intersted in one
thing - profit, and we provide it, this will probably result in a
shedload more fragmented standards for the audio industry - even as a
die hard mac user I would not have liked this development!
Not to mention logic control, which fortunately I had not got around
to buying - I may yet switch back to mac but not for the mac - only
for Logic, but not until I see what apple do with it, and during my
last conversation with emagic technical they told me they were having
problems getting it to work on OSX cos of all the background
services - remind you of any other operating system?
At the end of the day - pc or mac user - we have to wait and see what
becomes of logic before laughing about it, if apple naff it up - and
let's face it they're good at that too - it may be all of our loss
and the gentleman quoted above may be not have so much to laugh about!
