Wow, this is really weird news. Well, hopefully this means we'll be
seeing that OS X version sooner... I can't imagine that this will do
Emagic very well, financially. But I guess it will simplify their work,
and obviously give them some additional useful inside resources. It sucks
to split the Logic scene, though, and I feel really sorry for all of the
PC Logic users out there right now.

Oh, don't be such a dick, "autophonic."

Well, I don't really see where the comparison works at all. Gibson isn't
buying Emagic, it's Apple who are doing it. Gibson has a notorious
history of buying and destroying companies. Apple does not. In fact, if
anyone has done anything to, ummm, dignify Opcode's legacy (or something
like that), it's Apple because they hired Opcode's Doug Wyatt to work on
the MIDI system in Mac OS X.

Heh heh, I was waiting for you to come along and grab your moment, Howard.

Another problem for some of us PC users is the large ESX libarys we have
been amassing. If we change program all we have is the VST player version
EXP-24, we really need a full VST version of the EXS-24 that we can use in
other programs.
Oh and perhaps they could give it to us for fee, because I doubt there will
any money comming from the 70,000 LAW users hands ever again!!!
I am Soooo glad I chose not to pay the $400aus to upgrade. I knew something
didnt feel right.

Gibson bought Opcode, made big promises about all the good things they
were going to do for the company, and then gutted it.
Apple is, at the very least, gutting the Windows side of Emagic, so it
is an apt comparison in some respects. There is no reason why Apple
couldn't continue to support Logic on Windows (Microsoft supports
Office on the Mac, after all), except of course, because they want
people to use Macs. Personally, I don't see many Windows users
switching to Macs just to use Logic, but maybe I'm wrong.
As a one time Studio Vision user who switched to LAP, I am now in the
position of again having to switch to a new sequencer again. I bought
Logic because it was cross-platform, and I could use it with my
laptop, and my Mac.
This is bad for everyone who uses a computer to make music, as now
there are fewer choices, and less competition.
If anyone is interested, I have a copy of LAMP with EXS24 and ES1, as
well as a copy of LAWS for sale. Best offer takes it. Please reply
directly.

Wow - I guess Emagic must be really struggling. I can't see a thriving
company succumbing to this kind of aggresive and market limiting takeover.
I guess nobody at Emagic really cares (and I feel for those who may no
longer be at their desk!) but as a dedicated LAWP user since it first
appeared I feel totally betrayed. I have no intention of even entertaining
a move to Mac - if Apple think this will encourage PC->Mac migration, I
suspect they'll be disappointed. The way this has been dropped on the Logic
communtity could hardly have been less diplomatically handled - Steinberg
are already rubbing their hands!
I hope whatever sensible group action as can be mustered takes palce. The
cost of cross-grading to Cubase or Nuendo is a kick in the nuts, not to
mention the loss of EVP, SoundDiver updates etc. Perhaps somebody with more
knowledge of the legal agreement implicit in the version 5 upgrade can
comment on whether Emagic have any liabilities or responsibilities to their
existing user-base. I suspect not.
FWIW, personel at Sound Technology (Emagic's UK distributor) are shocked,
stunned and severely pissed off. I can't see this doing alot for relations
with Emagic's business partners, never mind the confidence of their
user-base. Emagic becomes part of a much bigger pie and much more prone to
complete dissolution if it doesn't pay it's way or overall strategy calls
for resources to be diverted elsewhere.
I guess this is 'farewell' to and for alot of people on this list. See you
all on the other side!!

And me, too. Years of investions of thousands of euros. 100% stable
Win-DAW. And now I'm supposed to buy a completly foreign system? No
way, guys.
Just purchased ES2. Was going to buy Evoc20 this month and LC the end
of the year. Not anymore. What about the promised updates? Is there
still a developer team for windows which will give us the promised
features? Or will Apple freeze it at once to rip us off?
No Steve, you have bought emagic, but you can't buy me.
Lot of sadness these days

I certainly won't be. I was just starting to enjoy using Logic 5.0
and have been using SoundDiver for a year. The support for updating
SoundDiver is so far behind, and now the problems will most likely
never be fixed for PC users.
My new XSkey registration is in progress, so I am attempting to find
out my options for aborting that, and getting my money back.
Damn shame :(
