Hi all,
I thought people might be interested:

mmmmmmmh! very rare decision to stop windows releases, especially with the
recent release of samplitude, which is windows only...
But anyways, I'm happy I switched to the mac earlier!

PC Gang - Sorry about the bad news. Apple/ Emagic will have to find a way to
compensate PC users who spent thousands of dollars on Emagic's products.
But... as a Mac user I feel this step was essential for Apple. Not once I've
been frustrated with the reluctance of developers to release a Mac version
of their plug-ins. I think Apple saw a big migration to the PC platform in
their crystal ball - especially since Win XP is a really good and stable
OS. They had to prove that they're serious about their commitment to
musicians - not only graphic designers/ film directors.
A whole system (from the very low level kernel to the hardware) designed
from the ground up for music and multimedia creation? not a bad idea at all.
So maybe finally we'll see developers porting their work to the Mac
platform... ?
Cheers,
-Nir

Why would a developer wish to develope a product for a shrinking
user base instead of a growing one? It boggles the mind.

It's hard to know what happened here, but it's probably something
like this
E-Magic start to do really well with version 5. You could see it
overtaking Cubase in popularity. E-Magic struggle to keep up
production. This explains a lot about the last few months. Cash flow
may have been a problem - it's hard to go from small to huge - most
companies fall at this stage.
Apple make a bid for E-Magic. Not sure how the company are set up,
share-wise, but it could have been a hostile takeover of just a 'too
good to miss' offer. Apple see their small music market share held by
integrating Logic, the most popular Mac based sequencer.
Makes perfect market sense for Apple, none for E-Magic. But E-Magic
do not , in reality, exist any more as a seperate company.
I could be totally wrong of course!

I think it has not looked good for Emagic for the past year - too
much delay time between the big announcements for LC, L5 various
plugs - and their arrival - all this time that nothing is shipping
means no cash coming in.
On top of that - aside from a couple of people on this list -
virtually none of the many Logic users I know personally have
invested in LC. I am just guessing - but I think this product, which
surely cost some significant development $$ - has just not taken off
as hoped for in terms of actual sales. That would be another cash
crunch.
I also know a number of Logic users who are still sitting at 4.x
because their systems are older (still running serial interfaces - no
usb). The new dongle in L5 is a barrier - that and the fact that the
main array of new features centre around LC - which, for whatever
reason, does not interest them at this time. Translation - not as
many $$ in upgrades as expected.
So perhaps Emagic really needed help just to stay alive - Apple saw
an opportunity to bring in another premium multimedia app into the
fold. et voila.

Yeah right.
I already have several Mac-user friends who are saying they are going to
Steinberg. They rate cross-platform compatability over anything else.
People should be able to bring their home-made work to the studio. This far
Emagic has been the business for that. Now it ain't. I pretty convinced
there is at least a 2:1 ratio on Mac-users cross-grading to other software
as opposed to PC-users switching hardware. I use both, and have now ordered
cross-grading versions of Cubase for both. I have also sent out mail to
everybody I work or have worked with to do the same. I am also probably
going to ditch MAC hardware completely, and I have warned that it might
happen...
Best regards

I think that _basically_ people who make their
living from music composition either work on Macs
or have the extra dough to eventually own a Mac
for Logic. Certainly many Mac-based composers also
have a PC so that they can use GIGA, so owning 2
platforms is not that strange. Again, I'm talking
specifically about full-time composers. Are the
friends you've mentioned full-time professional
(meaning they make all their money from music)
composers/musicians?
Ned
PS: I do feel bad for PC users today. I hope that
Emagic and Apple will lighten the blow by offering
you some kind of compensation for this 'shaft'.

Where the heck to you get your delusions? Living off my musical skills for
the past 9 years (on PC), this has nothing to do with money. Even if you had
the money the Mac simply isn't power full enough to run, at least my
projects. The future of producing music is based on CPU power, software
samplers, software instruments, etc. The problem now is that we are set back
two or three years in CPU power. All the money in the world can't buy you a
Mac 2.4 GHz. It simply doesn't exists. I have to dig up all my MIDI based
equipment from the cellar again. *Sigh* This is just awful news... Back to
bouncing and all that shit.

before you draw the conclusion that mac is not fast enough to run
all your plug ins and audio, I suggest that you try them on a mac.
I've been using both platforms for sometime and raw cpu
performance
is some what miss leading when it comes to audio applications.
yes! it is terrible news that emagic is abandoning windows platform
but the performance of the software on one platform over the other
is the last thing that I would worry about.
Oh... I used to work for microsoft until last year and I make living
working on wintel machines.

Please refer to my other posts regarding Mac hardware and optimisations
performed by Apple.

If a company is in red or in dire straits and a Big Guy pays you nifty bucks
(and I mean affluent retirement and all) you may accept regardless of the
insanity of the idea. Sad but happens.
