OK I have a Mac and would never use anything else but who cares... I went
away
for the weekend and I come back and it seems all hell has broken loose in
Logic land! First It turns out the logic control hardware is *not* exclusive
to emagic and now "Apple acquires Emagic". This is bad. It seems
beyond
belief.
IS THIS A JOKE????
If I was a LAWP user right now I would be in tears.
This is just beyond terrible for them.
I would GLADLY SIGN A PETITION right now.
My thoughts:
This does not bode well for emagic. Why are they being "Acquired"
by Apple?
Did they over extent themselves with Logic control? Is that why Mackie can
now brand it for other sequencers? What do (did) the employees know, they
must
feel terrible. What will happen with the brilliant Michael Hydan? Logic
Control was his concept and I believe he had something to do with windows
support also. Sorry I am just typing in a haze here...
I have a bad feeling about all of this.
There is no way the brass at emagic agreed to this unless the company was in
some kind of trouble .
They would never screw over half their customers. This must be coming out of
the blue. They talked about cross platform support for the Logic Key. Were
always adamant about LAP being cross platform.
This was *not* a plan
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE???
As someone who earns most of his living with these products I have a sinking
feeling. And Im not even a PC user... To say they have been screwed is mild.
This is probaly the hugest blow to PC users in the histroy of music
production
software.
PS
How does the following read now in the light of being Emagic
"acquired" and
the appearance of "Mackie Control" (Performer Control)
From Oct 13, 2001 "News'
It is quite astonishing just how large an expenditure in terms of human and
financial resources is required in order to reach the ambitious goal that we
have set for Logic 5 and Logic Control: to offer the most intelligent and
complete integration of music production software and hardware controller
yet
available.
A core team of more than 30 hardware engineers, industrial designers,
software
developers and product managers have been working for almost a year on this
exciting project, and the accumulated development costs have long since
passed
the 1 million Dollar mark. While this is a much larger amount than Mackie
and
Emagic had originally calculated, the clear benefit is that Logic Control
has
also become much better than originally planned. This applies, not only to
the
quality of the total concept, but also to the quality of the individual
components such as displays, faders and switches. In spite of this, we,
together with Mackie, have decided to calculate the recommended retail price
as narrowly as possible. After all, this product was also developed to make
the advantages of professional hardware controllers, which have so far only
been accessible to customers with considerable financial resources,
affordable
for as many studios as possible - for even more creative options and
pleasure
during music production. <snip>

Apple acquiring Emagic is a clear sign of success. Companies get bought out
by larger, successful companies because of their attractiveness. Logic has
risen to the top. That makes Emagic an attractive partner for Apple's grand
plan. The upside is that the funding for Logic's development has much deeper
pockets now. Final Cut is a great example of creative empowerment brought
about by Apple.
What is regrettable is that it is platform exclusive.
