Every now and then I am given a CD of just music for which a singer to demo
over (usually to demo the singer or the song). In Pro Tools, I simply import
the audio/song onto a stereo track and then adjust the grid to the music by
putting a grid marker every 30 seconds or so that lines up with a eat of the
song. This way the grid will always line up and not drift, and only takes a
couple minutes to set up.
How can I do this in Logic? I know there are no beat markers, just a tempo
map
(which may be how it's done?). Thanks for any adivce.

PS - Simply finding the closest tempo doesn't always work as the audio
usually
drifts (though not always).

Hello, Colin!
Maybe you already know these following suggestions, IMHO they are fine tools
for similar situations:
Try to get used with the Reclock-Feature. You can make a Midi-Sequence by
pressing ie. the sustain pedal on every Bar, and use it to generate a
tempochange-list by reclocking. You find it under
Options->Tempo->Reclock
Song...
But if you're certain about the timing of the song (ie. Techno, or other
music with rock solid metrum) you can use automatic tempo matching... you
know this feature, don't you?!

I have a different approach, and welcome comments:
In the audio editor window (double click on file in Audio page), I move the
start
point of the region to the closest bar (e.g. Bar 1).
Open a tempo list window. Create a tempo event at this start position, if
it's
not there already.
Now if you move the tempo at this bar in the tempo list, you should note
that
the bar numbers change also move in the open audio editor window (or else
set "views" to "bar/beats/ticks"). Move the tempo so
that the next downbeat of
Bar 2 lines up with the downbeat "visually". Say you've got a
straight 4/4 hi-
hat intro (heh), then you just adjust the tempo until all the quarter notes
line up
with the markers above the waveform display.
Create a new tempo event at bar 2...then move this tempo so that the
downbeat matches up with Bar 3.... etc.
Continue this process until you're done. You may be lucky and
"find" the right
tempo once, and that's it for the whole song! On other arrangements, you may
have to do this process every 4 bars, every bar, or maybe sub divisions if
there is lot of rubato stuff going on. It's of course also easier to do if
the attack
transients are easy to see, like a rim shot, hihats, big crash... etc.
I find this method more surefire than trying to play the beat and then
reclocking. But then again, I guess if the song's tempo is really all over
the
place, perhaps reclocking is the way to go.
At any rate, it's a bit closer to your ProTools method by the sounds of it.
Hope that helps
Ken
