Subject: [LAM] XSkey killed my mac (welcome to my nightmare)
Message #104858
Hi everybody, I've spent the last two days trying to figure out a huge crash I had. All of a sudden LAM 5 crashed while trying to insert a renEQ or something on a track. It just froze. The whole computer froze. I had to do a hard reboot. But it wouldn't start. All I got was a little bomb in upper left corner. After trying a bout twenty times I gave up. I tried to boot into MacOs X instead using the alt function at start up. Now it took about 10 mins for the little clock to stop turning. But when I choose X it doesn't start. I just get a broken folder. I then try to start from an external system drive. Same thing. BOMB!! Well, this goes on for about a day. I try unplugging all external hard such as My MOTU and extra hard drives. I try unplugging USB stuff and firewire stuff. Same thing. I change the memory. Same thing. I tried to start from the MacOs 9 CD. Same thing. I then give up. I go home thinking it must be hardware related somehow. Probably something within the computer itself. Well, I come back the next day. Now my Mac starts like nothing ever happened. Hmm that was weird! I start working but after about an hour Logic crashes again. (BTW I've been using LAM5 for about a month without a single crash!!) Now the same procedure as the day before starts but after about two hours I give up. I have deadlines to meet. I go and get my key and move to another room. BUT!! Then it hit me... The only thing I hadn't tried was removing the XSkey from my keyboard. With great anticipation I grab the key , pull it from the keyboard, and hit the start button. I look away, because I'm so nervous! Now my wonderful new Dual ghz mac starts without any problem what so ever. Great! Just to make sure, I reboot again, and again. Starts everytime. I now reconnect the XSkey and fire up LA5. No problem. OK so here I am, with deadlines on four productions, what should I do?? Well I like to be on the bleeding edge so I quit logic and reboot the computer... Now the thing starts up without any problem. I start Logic and work for 9 hours without a glitch. I think it's pretty bad if the key can get screwed up by a crash. I am a quite experienced Logic and Mac user, I've troubleshooted many times but this was the worst thing ever. And it took me almost two days to figure out... Best, mardyk My setup: Dual ghz Apple Powermac. 512 mb ram, MOTU 2408mk2, MT4, 80gb (3parts) IDE for systems and backup,18 GB IBM Ultrastar UW scsi for audio,18 GB seagate Cheetah (ext LaCie) (2 parts) for system and audio, 15 GB IBM deskstar for Samples. ATTO scsi accelerator.
